If you’re an avid fan of Taiwanese night market snacks, then you just need to know this: the insanely crazy Taiwanese snack, peanut ice cream roll, is going to be in all Dessert Story outlets from 3 April 2017 onwards.
You’re welcome.
Now, to people like me who still prefers cai png than some fancy dessert that costs more than a plate of cai png, here’s what you need to know: this dessert is crazily popular in Taiwan, in particular Taipei’s Jiufen.
If you find this snack remotely familiar, it could be due to this video about a girl making and selling the snack that has gone viral.
People were going to Taiwan just to see her, and she somehow made the snack globally known. Or so I thought.
The idea is relatively simple: think of it as a popiah, but the main filling to be ice-cream instead of vegetables. Now, if you’d ask me, that’s simply east meets west.
To give you an idea of how it tastes, just imagine this: you’ll be biting into an ice-cream wrap with fresh peanut candy shavings, and some leaves (to be more specific, corianders). It’s like having our old-school ice-cream bread, but much sweeter due to the peanut candy shavings.
One of my colleagues who has makan-ed the one in Jiufen agrees that the authenticity is there, and it’s for a good reason: Dessert Story invested heavily in this product by importing blocks of peanut candy from Taiwan, each weighing 25 kg.
While the ice-cream, technically, is the main ingredient, it’s the peanut shavings that stand out. They’re shaved so finely that they’re almost watery, blending into the ice-cream and your mouth to create that oh-so-sinful-yet-so-satisfying feel.
There’re two flavours available: coconut and yam. If you opt for just one flavour, it’ll cost $3.50, and if you go for one with a mixed flavour (two flavours in one popiah), it’ll be $3.90.
Now, if you’re so obsessed with imagining the taste and have forgotten what you’ve read, here’s a recap: this popular dessert will be in all Dessert Story outlets from 3 April 2017 onwards.
And here’re all the outlets: Hougang Mall (#02-18), Tiong Bahru Plaza (#B1-140), Junction 8 (#B1-K12), nex (#03-17) and Sun Plaza (#01-26).
