What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Popeyes?”

Is it this fellow whom the gram-loving youngsters won’t have known about?

Or fried chicken that has some hardcore fans?

No matter who you are, you won’t have though of stuff like kaya or coconut.

But be prepared to be mind-blown because Popeyes has just released its secret weapon, and it’ll supposedly make you go “Wah”.

Wah.

Spicy Coconut Chick N’ Wah!-ffle

Lest you think the name is a handle for a gamer, it isn’t. That’s really the name of their new item.

This isn’t the first time Popeyes comes out with a waffle burger. Last year, somewhere around this period, they came out with their first ever waffle burger and it wowed my colleague: so much so that after his review, we all went to try it and most of us agree with him.

Back then, it could well be the best-est fast-food item, though it could be the reason why my colleague failed his IPPT soon after.

This year, Popeyes took it up a notch by throwing almost anything edible on the burger.

There’s nacho cheese on top.

There’s a chocolate Belgium waffle as the top bun.

There’s a crispy chicken patty that’s not just spicy, but coconut-flavoured, too.

There’s kaya below the patty.

And then there’s another waffle at the bottom.

Suffice to say, that’s one heck of a burger that’s hard to stomach…literally.

But we’re not going to give up just because it sounds like an April Fools’ item, and so we bought it for this week’s #FastFoodFriday.

Is it worth the calories?

Let’s find out.

First Look

There are a few foods that’ll look good no matter where and how they’re made: cai png, kang kong and of course the famous waffle.

The square holes add depth on a picture while the brown surface isn’t too strong to the eyes.

Change the brown to black, because everything charcoal, and it’ll be a sin if it doesn’t look good.

Thankfully, our dollars and bytes weren’t wasted on this out-of-the-world concoction:

It doesn’t just look good; it looks delicious, too.

With that in mind, I took a bite and one thing came to my mind.

Taste Test

Is this McGriddles?

If you’d have noticed, the burger comprises primarily stuff that are sweet. One bite and it remains me of McGriddles that’s on overdrive: everything’s sweet, including the chicken.

The nacho cheese adds a tad bit of savoury but it’s overshadowed by the sugary taste of the chocolate Belgium waffle.

In fact, it’s so sweet that the Pepsi that comes with it suddenly doesn’t taste right, for my mouth is now an open invitation for ants to invade (what a description, I know).

But.

Despite its sweetness, the combination surprisingly works well. My tongue couldn’t register any kaya or coconut, but the entire ensemble is akin to a Zinger burger that’s sunk in organic honey – the only thing that’s reminding me that it’s a burger is the crispiness of the chicken.

And boy oh boy, it’s actually pretty good.

However, it gets a little jaded after a while, and so you might need some fries to down with it. Could be the sweetness overload, though.

Judging from the ingredients, it seems to pack quite a bit of calories as well, so if you’re watching your diet, you might want to share it with a friend.

If not, it’s worth the calories. Just remember to have some fries with it and you’re good to go.
