Graduation is one of the rituals in life that people in life take for granted.
For some of us, it’s the time to complain about the graduation tailoring companies for selling things we only use once in our life.
For others, it’s a time of pride for the young ones who move on to the next stage in their lives.
But regardless of which camp you are on… some people don’t have the fortune of my cynicality for school graduation. For them, graduation is the representation of hope.
A father in the Philippines couldn’t afford proper attire, and instead just came to his daughter’s graduation in a Superman shirt.
They couldn’t even afford shoes
The original story was published in GoodTimes, back in April 2019, where they found the story from Shiela Mae Matre-Ruiz’s Facebook.
Shiela was at the graduation ceremony and decided to share the story after witnessing the pair in the ceremony.
The father is a Mangyan, one of the 8 indigenous groups found on the island of Mindoro, who works as a construction worker at La Fortuna, Oriental Mindoro.
Although they make just enough to survive, he made sure to use the money for his daughter’s education.
If you look carefully, they didn’t even wear shoes.
Netizens also noted that despite their circumstances, the father made sure to have a toga for the daughter to wear.
Redrawing of Superman
In a recent tweet, the story is to be revived again, this time with an art makeover of the father in full Superman:

And both of them with shoes.
Netizen reactions
Netizens were touched by their situation and impressed by the father’s dedication to send his daughter to school. Many also expressed a desire to send them clothes and shoes.

Translating to: “My heart is broken. May her father succeed in his work and hopefully, his daughter will do well in school to make him proud.”
dad. the only man that will never tired to equip us with things we want without even thinking about what he needs.

Some also commented that the dad is basically the same as a comic book superhero.

Documentary on their village
A Twitter user noted that there is an existing mini-documentary on his tribe.
The man in the picture is a Filipino. He is a member of the tribe Mangyan. Watch this video if you want to know more about him.https://t.co/kr3sK47QLB

In the documentary, you can see them receiving help from volunteers who knew of their story after images of his superman appearance going viral.
Here, you can see the village receiving slippers:
Which would definitely help them since it seems common for them to get injured from not having proper footwear:
And educational materials for the children in the village:
One commenter on YouTube noted that the father always smiled when talking about his daughter.
Just hit me with the feels.
