If you’re someone who needs a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, here’s some bad news – your favourite kopi beng might contain more sugar than you think.
In fact, probably everything contains more sugar than you think.
The Straits Times compared the sugar content among various local favourite beverages, and while some top contenders might not come as a surprise, there are others which you’d never, ever expect to make the list.
1. Iced Lemon Tea
It’s no surprise that Coca-Cola and Pepsi would be among the unhealthiest options – but what caught us by surprise was Iced Lemon Tea topping the list at 35g of sugar per serving. A pity, considering it’s many people’s go-to beverage on a sweltering day.
So the next time you try convincing yourself that iced tea’s the healthier alternative to sugary sodas, don’t.
2. Pepsi, Sprite and Coca-Cola
At 29.5g, 28g and 26.25g of sugar respectively, these three have never been shy about their ridiculously high sugar content – even coming up with “healthier” variations Coke Zero, Diet Pepsi and Coke Light (which, let’s be real, doesn’t make much of a difference).
3. Horlicks and Milo Dinosaur
Yeah, we know.
These malt beverages stand at a whopping 26g and 25.75g of sugar respectively, putting them at third place on the leaderboards.
Despite being marketed as energy drinks which supposedly has lots of vitamins, minerals, and the like, they contain just as much sugar – which is probably the reason for the spike of energy that comes along with them.
