How far will you go for 4D? For one particular FDW, she was willing to borrow from loan sharks to fund her gambling addiction.
However, the catch is this: she did not borrow using her personal details. She did so using her employers’ details.
FDW So Addicted to Buying 4D She Borrows From Loan Sharks Using Employers Details
When Chen Bihua (hanyu pinyin) hired the Indonesian FDW named Sumila in May 2018, the last thing she expected was an unwanted bundle deal—hire one FDW, and get a habitual gambler for free.
The 39-year-old FDW’s job scope was mainly to care for Chen’s ageing parents. Chen’s father was bedridden after a stroke, and her mother was plagued with hearing problems and dementia.
The FDW had one job, quite literally.
While Sumila was able to do her job well the first couple of years, her side “hustle” as a gambler eventually overtook her job to become her main priority.
On Thursday (11 May), an ah long suddenly approached Chen Bihua and her 54-year-old brother, Chen Wen Fa (hanyu pinyin), at their home. Only then did the FDW finally reveal to her employers that she had been borrowing money from loan sharks using their details to fund her 4D addiction.
However, as one would expect, the FDW did not have sufficient money to pay off her debt to the ah longs, which explains why the loan sharks eventually knocked on the door of the Chen family.
Upon finding out about this, the Chen family decided to lodge a police report and terminate Sumila’s employment with the family.
FDW Asked Employers for Advanced Salary Payouts Earlier This Year to Fund Gambling Habits
Regardless, we’re still far from understanding how severe the FDW’s gambling addiction was.
The FDW was so addicted to gambling that aside from borrowing from loan sharks using her employer’s name, she started requesting advanced salary payouts at the beginning of this year.

The Chen family agreed to Sumila’s requests because of their yet-to-be-shattered illusion of their FDW’s character, allowing her to draw approximately $5,400 worth of salary in advance.
To tug at the heartstrings of her employers, the FDW cited reasons such as how her family in Indonesia needed money. According to Shin Min Daily News, the 39-year-old sometimes even broke into tears explaining how her daughter needed money for university and her older sister needed money for surgery.
Instead of being an FDW, perhaps Sumila should have been an actress.
Several Winning Tickets Discovered In FDW’s Items
The only saving grace the 39-year-old FDW could have is that, at the very least, some of her 4D tickets were winning tickets.
When the Chen family cleared up Sumila’s items after she left, they discovered multiple winning tickets with prize money ranging between $15 to $1,250.
Quite a sum, but still far from enough to fund the FDW’s 4D addiction.
Police are currently investigating the matter.
Gambling seems to be rearing its ugly head once again recently, with reports of big names like Wang Lei still under the chokehold of his gambling problem, or even Kim Lim’s ex-husband, who was jailed for his role in an illegal gambling syndicate, surfacing earlier this month.
It’s no secret that the gambling problem remains prominent in Singapore even today. Yet, it’s not too late to stop if you find yourself, a friend or a family member experiencing gambling problems.
You may contact the National Council on Problem Gambling for support on their website or at 6354 8154.
Remember, gambling is not worth it.
