A 24-year-old FDW was jailed for biting and pinching a baby under her care.
Here’s why she did it.
24YO FDW Sentenced to 20 Months’ Jail for Biting and Pinching 11-Month-Old Baby
On Thursday (6 February), a 24-year-old FDW was sentenced to 20 months’ jail for biting and pinching a baby under her care. The baby was only 11 months old.
The FDW’s name is redacted as there is a gag order on the case to protect the baby’s identity.
So, why did the FDW bite and pinch the baby, and how did her employers find out about it?
FDW Bit and Pinched Baby When Baby Refused to Sleep; Lied to Employer About it
For the longest time, the FDW’s employer was not aware of her FDW’s actions.
While the FDW’s employer first noticed a bite mark on the baby’s left forearm on 6 November 2024 and asked the FDW about it, the FDW claimed that the bite mark could have been caused by the baby biting himself.
Later, on 20 November 2024, the FDW told her employer that she had found a bite mark on the baby’s arm while showering the baby.
Yeah, we wonder where that bite mark came from…
Yet, when the FDW was questioned about the bite mark, she told the employer that she did not know how the baby got the bite mark.
The baby’s mother then decided to check the CCTV footage, during which she discovered that on 19 November 2024, the FDW had picked the baby up from his cot when he was crying. From how the baby was arching away from the FDW, the mother suspected that the FDW had pinched the baby’s waist.
And when Singaporeans get ahold of CCTV footage, there are only two things they could possibly do — confront the person, or post it on Facebook. The baby’s mother chose the former, and decided to confront the FDW on 24 November 2024.
When the baby’s mother confronted the FDW, the FDW came clean. She admitted to pinching the baby twice on his waist on that occasion, and also admitted to biting the baby’s arm on or before 20 November 2024.
The employer subsequently lodged a police report on 24 November 2024.
The question is this — why did the FDW bite and pinch the baby?
Well, it was for a very simple reason.
The FDW claimed that she had to perform household chores without any rest the entire day, and was only able to go to bed after midnight everyday. Yet, she shared a room with the baby. When the baby refused to sleep, the FDW got angry and bit and pinched the baby.
Violence Against Children Not Tolerated
In sentencing the FDW, the judge emphasised that violence against children would not be tolerated, given that children are vulnerable persons who must be given the full protection of the law.
The judge further added that even if the FDW was deprived of sleep, it was wholly disproportionate for the FDW to have resorted to abusing an innocent child.
The maximum punishment for ill-treating a child is eight years’ imprisonment, $8,000 fine, or both.
