Fifty Shades and Spider-Man are worlds apart. Regardless, there are plans for these two series to share the same actress.
For those who need a little more context, Fifty Shades is a film series that consists of three erotic romantic drama films. Meanwhile, the Spider-Man films are vastly different in that they are action-based superhero movies. One may say the two movies include action—but in distinct ways.
Dakota Johnson Takes On Title Role in Spider-Man Spin-off Movie
Having starred in Fifty Shades as the main character, Dakota Johnson is on her way to venturing into the Marvel Cinematics Universe—taking on the title role of Madame Web in a Spider-Man spin-off movie.
According to the entertainment site, Deadline, sources revealed that Sony was looking to “expand its universe of Marvel characters,” following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the movie reaped a whopping $2.3 billion (US$1.7 billion) in box office receipts, making it the biggest film of 2021.
In the 80s Marvel comics, Madame Web is an elderly woman who possesses psychic sensory powers. A mutant with psychic abilities, she has helped Spider-Man in his endeavours.
It wasn’t easy for Johnson to land Madame Web’s role either; Sony executives met with many A-listers in 2021, making several cuts to the list within two months. Yet, Johnson made it to the front-runner status for the title role.
On 5 Feb, Dakota hinted at the news by posting a mysterious Instagram story that looked like this—a spiderweb emoji against a black background.
That aside, the 32-year old actress is celebrated for her film productions, such as Am I Ok? and Cha Cha Real Smooth, with the latter being sold to Apple for $15 million.
The start of 2022 also saw her succeed in playing an acclaimed role in Netflix’s The Lost Daughter.

Sony Faces Backlash
However, given that Madame Web is blind while Johnson is not, not everyone is in support of her casting; having an able-bodied actress depict Myasthenia gravis —a rare long-term condition— might spell opportunities for misrepresentation.
Some expressed their criticism on Twitter:
Meanwhile, others are simply excited for Johnson to be Madame Web.
