3 Men Fined After Holding a Farewell Party During Phase One; Caught ‘Coz They Were Too Loud

Social gatherings were only allowed in Phase Two.

However, a group of men decided to jump the gun when they invited people into their home to throw a farewell party for two of their colleagues on 11 Jun 2020.

According to CNA, Malaysians Kalairasu Engaidurai, 27, Murugan Supramaniyam, 25, and 25-year-old Sugumar Govindan stay together in a rental flat with three other colleagues, all working in the same company.

They invited two of their colleagues, Malaysians Kamal Raj Subramaniam (34) and Saravanan Amariah (36) on their last day of work to their home for a farewell party.

Four other men were invited to the party.

They started the party at 8pm and throughout the three-hour party, the men played music loudly and drank alcohol.

Police Called As Neighbour Afraid Of Fight Breaking Out

Sometime before 11pm, a neighbour noticed a group of men “behaving rowdily” outside the unit and was afraid that a fight would break out so she called the police who went down to the location.

Sugumar then left the unit with six other men and smoked at the playground below, all of them not wearing masks.

It was there where the police came across them.

Charges & Punishment

Malaysians Kalairasu Engaidurai, 27, Murugan Supramaniyam, 25, and 25-year-old Sugumar Govindan each pleaded guilty to one charge of “permitting others to enter their residence for a social gathering for a purpose that was not permitted”.

Sugumar, who was caught downstairs at the playground with six other men, had a second charge of “meeting the six other people at the playground for an unpermitted social purpose” taken into consideration.

Kalairasu and Murugan were fined $3,000 each while Sugumar was fined $3,500.

The prosecutor who has asked for the penalties to be imposed on the men says that it is important for people to keep social interaction to a minimum during that period.

These men knew the laws and chose to break them, he said, and although they had pleaded guilty, they were caught red-handed by the police.

As for the other men, their cases are still pending.

These men aren’t the first to get caught for gathering during a time where social gatherings were not allowed because they made too much noise.

Previously, a group of foreign students were also caught after a neighbour called the police on them.

They were fined and 12 of them were deported and banned from Singapore.
