If you thought brutal brawls can only happen in Fight Club—
Reader: You just broke the first rule of Fight Club.
Anyways, such things could also happen in this little red dot, Singapore.
Five men involved in a deadly gang fight outside Concorde Hotel on Orchard Road have been sentenced to between two and three years in jail, plus two to six strokes of the cane.
The five defendants—Puthenvilla Keith Peter (26), Sashikumar Pakirsamy (34), Raja Rishi (28), Sridharan Elangovan (30), and Manojkumar Velayanatham (32)—previously pleaded guilty to one count each of rioting. They were convicted on Tuesday (25 Feb 2025) at the State Courts.
The Fatal Incident
The brawl happened around 6:00 AM on 20 August 2023 outside Concorde Hotel, resulting in one casualty. The victim was 29-year-old Mohammad Isrrat Bin Mohd Ismail, who was a secret society member.
At least 15 people were later charged in connection with the case. According to court documents, Manojkumar, Sridharan, and Sashikumar were secret society members from a different gang as the victim.
The night before the incident, these three men and Raja met with friends at a nightclub on Serangoon Road to celebrate someone’s birthday. The group spent the night going to different nightclubs, drinking several bottles of hard liquor.
Around 4:00 AM on the day of the incident, the group moved to Club Rumours at Concorde Hotel and Shopping Mall, where Puthenvilla joined them.
Isrrat, who had previously worked as a bouncer at this establishment, was there with his friend Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman (30) to distribute the former’s wedding invitation cards to club staff.
After learning from the chief bouncer of Club Rumours that members of a rival gang were also at the nightclub, the two armed themselves with knives for self-defence.
Escalation to Violence
Around 6:00 AM, as the nightclub was closing and customers were leaving, Isrrat and Shahrulnizam hurled vulgarities at the defendants’ group, who responded by shouting their secret society’s name. The two groups began pushing each other, creating chaos.
After Isrrat punched one of the defendants’ friends, Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran (30), he and Shahrulnizam quickly left the nightclub.
However, they were pursued by the members of the group through Kramat Lane. Halfway through the chase, Shahrulnizam drew a bread knife and injured three people.
Isrrat and Shahrulnizam then fled back to Concorde Hotel, injuring another person on the way.
When the defendants’ group learned that people had been slashed, they decided to seek revenge. They surrounded and beat the victim up in the corridor outside the nightclub, at the hotel exit, and on the escalator outside the hotel.
During this time, Asvain picked up the knife Isrrat dropped and stabbed him multiple times.
The five defendants participated in the chase and assault, punching and kicking the victim. After being stabbed, the victim was taken to the hospital but unfortunately died.
The autopsy report showed that he had 32 injuries throughout his body, including eight stab wounds to his back and abdomen.
After Asvain stabbed the victim, he suggested that four people, including Sridharan and Manojkumar, take their passports and flee to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to evade arrest. They were later apprehended at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
Sentencing Details
The prosecution noted that the victim was surrounded and beaten by 11 people for six minutes. Whenever the victim tried to escape, the defendants’ group persisted with the beatings until he was finally stabbed and fell into a pool of blood.
Although his death could not be directly attributed to the five defendants, the victim had numerous bruises in addition to stab wounds.
In passing sentence, District Judge Eddy Tham said that the brawl was initiated by the victim and his friend, who decided to bring knives. The defendants had initially gone to the nightclub to celebrate a friend’s birthday, and secret society leaders did not organize the gathering.
Therefore, the fact that three of the defendants were secret society members could not be considered an aggravating factor.
When determining the sentences, the judge considered factors including each defendant’s level of involvement, prior criminal record, and whether they attempted to flee after the incident.
Sridharan was sentenced to three years in prison and six strokes of the cane; Manojkumar and Raja received two and a half years in prison and four strokes of the cane; Puthenvilla was sentenced to two years and two months in prison and three strokes of the cane; and Sashikumar received two years in prison and two strokes of the cane.
Asvain has since been charged with murder, and his case is pending.
