Amidst all the recent drama surrounding the Workers’ Party, a former Member of Parliament (MP) from the party has something to say.
Former WP MP Lee Li Lian’s Fears
In her first post since National Day last year, former WP MP Lee Li Lian took to Facebook to verbalise her fears regarding the future of the Opposition in Singapore.
Lee was the MP for the Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC) from 2013 and 2015, and has been a member of Sengkang Town Council since WP won the Group Representative Constituency (GRC) in the 2020 General Elections.
In her post, she talked about why she joined politics: “My main reason for joining was everyone can play their part in moulding the politics we want in Singapore and THERE IS NOTHING TO BE FEARFUL about.”
However, with the increasing number of issues against Opposition MPs in recent years, and most importantly the possibility of WP losing its leader due to the recommendations by the Community of Privileges (COP), she expressed her doubt regarding this issue.
She ended her post with the lines, “But now I fear. I fear not because of my affiliation. I fear that interested individuals who want to serve or make a difference in whatever ways, are thinking twice and getting turned off. I fear we may end up not having any alternative voices in Parliament.”
If you can’t tell already, the main theme here is fear.
Within four hours, the post chalked up over 780 likes and 88 comments, along with 51 shares.
Netizens were mostly supportive, with many of them leaving comments of encouragement on her post.

What This Means for the Opposition
If Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap end up losing their seats in Parliament, this will then mean that Aljunied GRC will continue running with only three MPs left.
On top of that, due to the fact that Pritam Singh holds the positions of secretary-general of WP, as well as the Leader of the Opposition, a major reshuffle may have to occur in terms of who now represents the Opposition.
However, nothing is set in stone yet, so we can only wait and see what will happen next for now.
