Workers’ Party Responds to COP Final Report; Expresses ‘Grave Concern’ for 2 WP Leaders

With the report from the Committee of Privileges (COP) recently released, there has been an uproar of discussion regarding what’s going to happen to the Workers’ Party (WP).

And the Party itself has just released its Facebook post to break the silence, expressing the members’ “grave concern” for Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap.

I mean, of course they’re concerned lah. It’s their big boss who’s involved leh.

In the recent Facebook post posted today (11 February), WP brought up the fact that the COP released its final report, and that two of its members, Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap, are likely to face charges for their actions in Parliament.

I won’t bore you with the details, but here‘s all you need to know about the current situation surrounding the WP saga, with regards to how Mr Singh and Mr Faisal may be affected.

They also noted that “The last time criminal charges were brought against an elected Opposition MP relating to their political work was in the 1980s”.

Not the kind of history you want to be rewriting, huh.

WP Will Continue to Work for Singaporeans

In their post, the WP also assured Singaporeans that while the relevant members of the party cooperate with the various measures taken against them, the rest of “the Party will continue to work for Singapore and Singaporeans”.

They then concluded the paragraph by saying, “All our elected MPs will continue to serve our constituents to the very best of our ability while the Party’s work in other constituencies continues.”

Just to draw up a quick tally, with Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap potentially being involved in these investigations, this will leave Aljunied Group Representative Constituency (GRC) with three active MPs: Sylvia Lim, Gerald Giam and Leon Perera.

Meanwhile, Sengkang GRC has continued to operate with three members since former MP Raeesah Khan stepped down in November last year after admitting to lying in Parliament.

PAP Dominance

Although most of the post seemed impartial, there was one part of it that did not escape eagle-eyed netizens:

“Mr Pritam Singh, Ms Sylvia Lim and Mr Faisal Manap will be expressing their views on the COP report in Parliament (which, like the COP, is dominated by MPs from the ruling People’s Action Party).”

Hey, but I guess that’s still an actual fact…?

With that paragraph, it seems as if they’re hinting at the fact that they might be treated unfairly, given that they are the obvious minority.

Netizens’ Comments

The post quickly garnered over 1,600 likes and over 200 comments within four hours.

As expected, most of the comments were supportive of WP.

I mean, it’s literally their own Facebook page that’s liked by their supporters. There’s no ambiguity as to who they’re supporting, right?

However, there were also comments that pointed out the fact that the WP MPs might have been at fault in one way or another.

Additionally, some pointed out the exact point that WP highlighted in their Facebook post.

While others voiced their speculations.

Last but not least, there were also those who felt that it might be better to wait for investigations to conclude before we all start pointing fingers at each other:

Well, now that we’ve heard from both the COP and WP (albeit informally), all we can do now is sit back and wait for the next season of the WP saga after the MPs in Parliament have taken a vote to decide the next course of action.
