If you read my previous article where I went on and on about Japanese food, you’d know I take my sushi and mentaiko very seriously.
All aboard the sushi train.
Apart from craving local favourites like Maggi mee and roti prata late at night, I get the occasional craving for sushi every once in a while.
But it’s almost 12:00 a.m., where is my non-existent husband supposed to get sushi from…?
*Cue the Don Don Don Ki song which is constantly on repeat*
Don Don Donki
Fans of everything Japanese rejoice because the well-loved store which sells everything and anything from the Land of the Rising Sun will be opening their 4th outlet in Novena’s Square 2 Mall in May 2019.
Spotted by the ever reliable Singapore Atrium Sale Facebook Page, the upcoming store will be located in the basement of the mall, directly connecting to the MRT.
If you’re not clear where that is, that space used to be occupied by Harvey Norman.
Aggressive Expansion
Don Don Donki opened their first outlet at Orchard Central in December 2017 which is the only outlet opened 24/7, before expanding to 100AM at Tanjong Pagar and City Square Mall.
The largest outlet by far is the one located in City Square Mall.
According to The Straits Times, their 5th outlet will be located strategically in Terminal 3 at Changi Airport.
Soon, Singapore will drown in Don Don Donki’s theme song, just like how we were plagued with Baby Shark for the longest time.
Must-buy products to get from Don Don Donki
From food to electronics and quirky products like cosplay costumes, Don Don Donki’s product offerings are pretty much similar to that of Don Quijote in Japan, apart from the extensive range of course. It’s impossible to fit 8 levels worth of products across a few units considering the land scarcity in Singapore.
The following are some products you have to purchase in Don Don Donki (if they’re available in the new store, that is):
Sweet potato
If you can only get one item, this normal-looking but sweet tasting japanese sweet potato is your best bet. The one in Singapore tastes pretty good but man, the OG sweet potato sold in Japan is invincible. These cost less than S$3 per piece.
Horoyoi Shochu Cocktail (Cola)
Suntory is an all-rounded F&B company that offers both soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. This unique concoction consists of cola and an alcohol level of 3%, perfect for those with a low alcohol tolerance. It is for sale at S$3.50
Fresh meatÂ
A carnivore by nature, I’m automatically drawn to this section of the store every single time I visit Don Don Donki. With so many meat options to choose from for about S$10, it’s hard to just walk by without taking a quick look.
Fresh seafood straight from Japan
Attention sushi and sashimi lovers, THIS is your go-to place for a quick jap fix. Best of all – if you go late at night, chances are they’ll be clearing stocks and you’ll be able to get your favorite snack at a discounted price.
Address: #B1-06 to 75 Square 2, 10 Sinaran Dr, S307506
Note: There hasn’t been confirmation about the opening hours of the outlet slated to open at Novena, so don’t presume it’ll be 24 hours…yet.
Over in TikTok, there’s a drama involving property agents that’s caused by us. Here’s what happened:
