When we heard that dining in would be outlawed once again, our biggest worry was having lukewarm Prata or melted Ice Kachang at home.
After all, dining out is a Singaporean’s favourite pastime, followed by queuing and complaining.
But the ban on dining in presented an actual problem for some frontline workers like food delivery riders, who would have to ride all the way home just to have their meals.
Fortunately, just as in our first Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), there’ll be several dining places in public designated for these workers.
Front-line Workers Can Dine in Meal Areas at Malls & CCs
Frontline workers can now dine in at 30 meal areas set up in malls and community clubs across the country, despite the current restrictions on dining in.
This will provide a place for food delivery riders, safe distancing ambassadors, cabbies, and private hire drivers to eat.
While dining in at these venues, frontline workers will still have to adhere to several safe management measures, such as:
- Dining alone
- Keeping at least a 1m distance from other diners
- Wearing one’s mask when not eating or drinking
- Clearing the table after meals and helping to keep the area clean
Here is a list of all the dining venues available for frontliners:

Tightened Restrictions For Phase 2 (HA)
As you know, dining in will not be permitted during Phase 2 (HA), which ends on 18 Aug. Whether it’ll be allowed after that depends on our COVID-19 situation, of course.
In addition, caps for social gatherings and house visitors have been reduced to two. Grandparents caring for grandchildren will not be counted towards the visitor cap.
All high-intensity, maskless activities will be suspended during this period, including facials, saunas, and make-up services.
Due to the high number of cases in markets, visitors will now be required to check in with TraceTogether before entering wet markets and hawker centres.
At the moment, over 50% of our population has been vaccinated but 200,000 seniors above the age of 60 have not been jabbed.
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said our vaccination programme is ahead of schedule, but that the low vaccination rate for seniors remains a concern.
Let’s hope that the latest outbreaks will encourage more seniors to get inoculated, as we don’t want any of them to fall ill from the disease.
