Remember watching those futuristic movies where there are buses and cars without wheels on the roads? As they say, the future is now. These buses are indeed coming and it’s not even a dream. They have already been implemented in other countries such as Abu Dhabi, and are now going to become reality in Singapore.
If you are thinking that they look like mini MRTs or LRTs, you aren’t too far off. However, the best part about them is that they are able to travel on the roads.
This means that you could be driving right next to these driverless buses! These buses are named Group Rapid Transit vehicles and are somewhat like automated minibuses. Their capacity is 24 people.
SMRT and Dutch company 2 Getthere Holding have participated in a joint venture that will be aiming to commercialise the third-generation Group Rapid Transit vehicle system. This vehicle transport system claims to carry up to 8,000 passengers per hour in any single direction.
SMRT Services managing director Colin Lim says, “We can see these systems being applied in closed environments like campuses, hospitals, and business parks.” The system has already been tested in a campus, and the next step would be a trial of the system, after which, full implementation will begin.
If all goes well, we may already start seeing these driver-less vehicles on the public roads soon!
