Who would have thought that you’d be able to fly a WWII plane in an HDB flat?

Nestled away in a two-room HDB flat in Buangkok Crescent is The Gaming Mancave by Mr Norman Ng, which aims to provide a form of escapism from the dreary life of WFH.

Although it’s labelled a “mancave”, Mr Ng has readily assured that all are welcome—and indeed, with the vast array of activities available, there’s bound to be something for everyone.

Let’s take a closer look at The Gaming Mancave

According to Mr Ng, a former photojournalist based in the US, The Gaming Mancave is a private space for him to work, play, rest and spend time with friends.

“[The Gaming Mancave] is for those who are hungry for different experiences during this period of lockdown.”

Mr Ng has also mentioned that offering the mancave for private gaming sessions has helped to supplement his income, particularly since the pandemic had ground his work as a freelance photographer to a halt.

According to Mr Ng, The Gaming Mancave operates under HDB’s Home-Based Small Scale Business Scheme and takes all the necessary precautions to ensure that the space remains safe for customers—he disinfects and cleans all gaming equipment after use and leaves out hand sanitiser for guests as well.

The Gaming Mancave allows for only one VR player at any point in time, so Mr Ng recommends a maximum of four or five guests at a time for an optimized gaming experience.

The space has hundreds of games ranging from PS4 to about 20 virtual reality games and even arcade games.

Deeply immersive games such as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Half Life: Alyx is guaranteed to transport you to another world entirely as you struggle against zombie and alien invasions.

The highlight of The Gaming Mancave, however, is undoubtedly the flight simulation equipment that Mr Ng has amassed, amounting to more than $20,000.

Mr Ng commissioned a Russian-based artisan to create a joystick similar to those found in WWII fighter planes, to simulate operating WWII bombers.

The highly immersive experience may not be the most ideal for those with motion sickness, although Mr Ng promises a Muji lounge chair for recovering.

If fighting zombies or conquering the sky isn’t your thing, The Gaming Mancave offers a variety of other experiences for your perusal, such as boxing, rock climbing, and even performing surgery. There are also short films that you can enjoy with the magic of virtual reality without having to do anything at all—simply sit back, relax and let yourself be whisked away to another universe.

PS4 games are also readily available for you—Mr Ng has a big screen projector that can accommodate up to four players.

There’s even an arcade station filled with childhood favourites like Super Mario Bros and Street Fighter.

Of course, all that gaming is bound to make you hungry (or at the very least, thirsty with all the shouting), so fuel up with some snacks and drinks that you can order separately anytime.

According to Mr Ng, most people book The Gaming Mancave for four hours, and he suggests trying out the short VR experiences to get the most value for money, as some of the VR games take much longer to be completed.

He hopes to add a personal touch to the whole experience for his customers as well, saying, “I always try to find out about my guests before they arrive and will tailor the experiences to them.”
