Since George Goh Ching Wah announced his interest to be the next President of Singapore, social media comments and reports about him have been reverberating, but the man himself has been rather quiet.
Which is understandable, since even Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam hasn’t spoken much about the Presidential Election 2023.
Except for an exclusive interview with Zaobao, George Goh hasn’t been talking to the media, and instead, letting his social media platforms (in particular, Facebook) reach out to the public instead.
And yesterday (20 June 2023), he put out a statement in a strongly worded Facebook post.
George Goh Ching Wah Refutes Misinformation About Him, Said He’s Saddened By “Attacks”
On 20 June 2023, after an interview (yup, the third he has, following the first at the ELD, and the second with Zaobao), he posted this:
He said in a post that he is “disappointed to learn about the attempts and attacks to undermine my credibility,” and then added three-page press statement refuting the “falsehoods and misinformation”.
The first “misinformation” was something he addressed before: someone had mistaken (accidentally or deliberately) another George Goh, who is linked to the establishment, to him.
It wasn’t him, and he had addressed that last week in another press statement:
(In case you’ve not noticed, he loved putting out statements instead of a direct social media post)
He also addressed, in yesterday’s post, about his thoughts on people accusing him of being a puppet candidate. Similar to what he said in the exclusive interview with Zaobao, he said he is not a “puppet” or proxy to others.
He even further added that there were rumours “not based on facts” circulating online, and the press statement added that he “does not visit pubs, nightclubs and has no lawsuits pending against him or his companies”.
Finally, he exposed a fake George Goh Twitter account—an issue he had also addressed in a previous Facebook post:
The fake Twitter account explicitly mentioned that he is a “Malayan-born Singaporean businessman”:
As of time of writing, the fake account, which has just one follower, is still active.
George Goh Ching Wah: President and Prime Minister Should Work Together
Before his pointed press statement, he has sat down for an interview with the media at Holland Drive Market.
During the interview, he spoke about the role that he would play alongside with the Government.
He said that his role is to work together with the Government, and likened the Prime Minister as the brain while the President is the heart—both must work together, and function hand-in-hand.
@todayonline #singapore’s Presidential hopeful George Goh responds to criticisms that he may not understand the role of the elected #President. The businessman said on Tuesday (June 20) that the President does not function as a check on Government and has to work closely with the prime minister. #sgnews #sgfyp #sgtiktok #presidentialelection #sgpresidentialelection2023 #sgpresidentialelection ♬ original sound – TODAYOnline
He also added that people should trust the Prime Minister as he’s elected by the people.
