We don’t think much of it, but food labels are crucial to a quick and efficient shopping trip.
Sure, we might be able to identify items like tomatoes, mushrooms, and peanut butter without any labels, but how the heck would we distinguish meats, drinks, and desserts?
Of course, there’s also the issue of dietary restrictions; it’s important to label your food product accurately and list its ingredients, as some people might be allergic to them or may avoid them due to their religious beliefs.
In the case of one Redditor called u/MorteensG, however, it was a surplus of food labels that was the problem.
Redditor Confused by Meat With Two Different Labels
On Tuesday (31 Aug), a netizen took to Reddit to detail his confusion during a recent shopping trip at Giant supermarket.
u/MorteensG said he was shopping for groceries when he came across the following item:
I’m sure you can see why he was puzzled. The packet of meat in the picture has two different labels.
One says “Fresh Chicken Boneless Legs”, while the other says “Aust Pork Skin”. The two are very different products, of course, especially if one is restricted in your diet.
“So as a Muslim, this got me VERY confused…” the Redditor said.
Fortunately, the supermarket responded to the incident, and we now know what that product actually was.
Giant Apologises For Mislabeling Halal Chicken as Pork Skin
According to Giant, the product was indeed halal chicken but was inaccurately labelled pork skin.
“We are aware of the mislabelling in one of our stores and have taken swift action to rectify the mistake,” a Giant spokesperson told CNA.
The spokesperson added that they treat such incidents seriously and that they have checked all their in-store products to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Staff members have also been briefed on the incident.
“We thank our customers for bringing this to our attention and apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the spokesperson said.
Similar Incident Occurred Last Month
Believe it or not, another resident on a shopping trip had the same complaint during a shopping trip last month, but this time in NTUC FairPrice.
She shared a picture of packaged meat which had two labels, one which said “Fresh Minced Chicken” and another which read “Pork Loin Slice”.
The resident urged her Muslim friends to be careful, saying she was lucky she didn’t buy the product in the end.
NTUC Fairprice later issued an apology on Facebook, saying it was a chicken product “erroneously labelled as pork.”
