A man was caught for filming a woman showering.
No, the man was not an NUS student.
On Friday (14 Oct), Zhang Haibo, 29, was sentenced to 15 weeks’ imprisonment for installing the spy camera to record others while they were nude, and for possessing a voyeuristic recording.
Here’s how the situation unfurled.
The glasses with a pinhole camera
A 35-year-old woman had found it strange that a pair of spectacles was left in the common toilet of her apartment.
Upon inspecting the spectacles, she saw it – the abhorrent blinking red light. The pair of spectacles was a spying device with a tiny camera that was recording all along.
Women really do have a sixth sense.
The landlord subsequently rounded up all the tenants and asked if anyone owned the glasses. The perpetrator, Zhang, stood amongst them, but denied owning the glasses.
Since no one had admitted to owning the spectacles, the victim and another female tenant made a police report on 29 August 2021.
The Chinese national was arrested later the same day.
How Zhang did it
Sometime before 27 August 2021, Zhang got his hands on a $40 spy camera disguised as a pair of black glasses online. He planned to use it to record female tenants showering in the common toilet.
Maybe the internet isn’t exactly that great of a place.
The spectacles had a pinhole camera with a video recording function, and footage would be stored in a memory storage card in it.
Zhang had placed his newest purchase on the metal rack near the toilet’s sink, faced towards the showering area.

The next day at around 1pm, the victim noticed the spectacles while showering.
The victim, who cannot be named due to a court order, and another female tenant made the police report out of fear that other videos might have recorded in the toilet.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Koh Yi Wen said that as part of investigations, the police seized several of Zhang’s electronic devices on 2 September 2021.
In his email inbox, the police found a video recording of an unknown female’s exposed buttocks in a public location, which Zhang had taken using his iPhone on 22 April 2021.
Zhang’s layer, Jeyabalen Balasingam, said that Zhang’s actions had “come out of his loneliness”.
Well, he isn’t the only lonely one – the rest of us just deal with our loneliness in better, more legal ways…
In pleading for leniency, Zhang’s lawyer added: “There is also a good chance his S Pass will be revoked and he would have to be deported. His future is gone because of this ridiculous thing he has done.”
The “future” argument sound familiar?
The S Pass issued by the Ministry of Manpower allows mid-level skilled workers to gain employment in Singapore.
For installing equipment to record someone’s naked body, Zhang could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or any combination of the three.
For possessing a voyeuristic recording, he could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, or both.
