Remember when “Promo Codes” were a commonplace mechanics in Grab?
It was really “Easy” to get them and it made Grabbing seemed like the smart, “Seamless” and organic transition from conventional taxis as they were so cheap as if “NoCash” was involved with each ride.
Ha, see what I did there?

But that was 2018 and before; we are now in 2019.
Luckily for us, we still do have USD 120 billion-valued Uber to rely on…
…Oh wait, Grab bought over their business too.
Go Go Power Go-Jek
Like Power Rangers from my forgotten childhood, Go-Jek seized the initiative in May 2018, 2 months after Uber’s exit in March 2018, and announced that it would be arriving on our shores near end-2018.
29 November 2018
Then on 29 November 2018, Santa came early and delivered Go-Jek beta into the hands of gleeful Singaporean commuters.
As CNA reported:
“At the initial stage, the app will be made available only in areas like Singapore’s Central Business District, Jurong East, Changi, Punggol, Ang Mo Kio and Sentosa. Only passengers who are travelling to and from these listed areas may book a ride with Go-Jek during the beta phase.”

The report added that the beta version was only available for DBS/POSB customers, who were were given “S$5 voucher credit for each of their first two rides” and enjoyed priority on wait-lists.
Oh. Not for everyone yet.
2 Jan 2019
Then on January 2, Go-Jek announced that the app was ready for use islandwide, and added that the island-wide rollout was part of their continued beta phase, during which DBS/POSB Bank customers still continued to enjoy priority access to the app.
Oh. Still not for everyone yet.

10 Jan 2019
And today, fresh out of the oven, Go-Jek finally announced that its that its services were now available to all consumers islandwide as part of “an enhancement of its beta phase.”
This meant that the app was available for use to all consumers, and not just limited to DBS/POSB customers.
Oh. Finally for everyone.
In addition, first-time commuters will receive two S$5 vouchers which they can use for two rides within two weeks of signing up, the company added.

For the first time since March 2018, USD 10 billion-valued Grab now has to look over it shoulders as a USD 5 billion-valued Go-Jek behemoth fills the boot of the departed Uber.
Enhance Beta Phase
According to Go-Jek in this CNA report:
“During this enhanced beta phase, Go-Jek seeks to further fine-tune its app and user experience based on feedback received from the increased number of driver-partners and riders who will use Go-Jek across the island.”
Because we at Lazy Feed are lazy just like our readers are, we’ve taken the liberty to do some hard work and summarized said fine-tuning in point forms for you.
- Better routing system for “more accurate and quicker routes” that will improve users’ waiting times
- “Pause” function that allows drivers to “go offline” and cease new trip requests before completing their current trip
- A heatmap which pinpoints areas of high demand that will result in more trips completed by both riders and passengers
Today Online added that the “pause” function was introduced by Go-Jek in response to drivers’ requests for breaks in between rides.
With all that being said and done, I’m pretty sure I know my choice of commute to our company’s Xmas/CNY/Valentine’s cai peng dinner venue later on.
