It is 2018, and you know what that means?

No, I am not talking about the impending apocalypse.

It is the World Cup which happens to be only four months away.

So get ready your face paint and jersey and be prepared to lose sleep since almost half of the matches occur after midnight.

Oh, yes, you might also end up paying more to catch it on tv.

Subscription cost will increase

In an interview James Walton, Deloitte Singapore and South-east Asia business group leader mentioned that the global rights deals for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups are “on average 90 per cent higher than the (previous) World Cup packages”.

So, this increment will eventually trickle its way down to the consumers.

In 2006, television subscription costs were between $15 and $25 and in 2010 the cost increased to between $70 and $94.

In Hong Kong, Chinese Internet firm, LeEnco paid over $67 million to secure the rights of the said event but in 2014, television station TVB only paid US$40million.

The article also mentioned that the range for the package may be in the $140 to $150 range.

With a television audience of 3.2 billion for the World Cup in 2014, viewership is likely to increase but does that mean, people, are willing to pay more?

Seshan Ramaswami, SMU’s associate professor said, “These prices cannot keep on rising forever. There will be some breaking point beyond which the demand will just slip to very small levels.”

Not to mention there are so many other platforms where viewers can watch the matches albeit illegally.

Thoughts

So will you be willing to pay more for one of the biggest sporting events in the world?

Or is it just easier to head to a sports bar and use that $150 on buckets of beers?
