Golden Mile Food Centre Will Be Closed from 1 Dec 20 to 28 Feb 21 for Renovations

If you love good food, or frequently lose your army items in the past, you’re probably familiar with Golden Mile Food Centre.

Loyal customers keep returning to the food court for their beloved Claypot Rice, Chilli Prawn Mee, and baked goods.

Tucked away in the three-storey centre is also the Beach Road Army Market, which, as the name suggests, is a store that sells army supplies, though the number of shops there is getting a lot fewer.

It used to be a frequent stop for many NSMen who are doing some last-minute reservist shopping.

Sadly, whether you need tasty food or supplies for your reservist, you’ll have to go somewhere else for the next three months.

Golden Mile Food Centre Will Be Closed from 1 Dec 20 to 28 Feb 21 for Renovations

According to Lianhe Wanbao, Golden Mile Food Centre will be closed to the public from 1 Dec, 2020 to 28 Feb, 2021 while it undergoes renovations and repairs.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) later confirmed the closure, adding that the hawkers will be taking a break as there’s no suitable site for them to set up temporary stalls.

Fans and ventilators will be changed during the renovation, to provide a more pleasant dining experience for customers.

However, there may not be a simple solution to the cramped seating layout in the hawker centre.

As one hawker told Lianhe Wanbao: “This is a hawker center that has been in business for 45 years. There is no room for expansion around it, and it is difficult to renovate the interior. What we can do for the time being is to remove the steps and build slopes to facilitate people with mobility issues.”

The chairman of the hawkers’ committee told Mothership that the renovation was initially slated for October 2020, but like many other projects, had to be postponed due to Covid-19.

As a result, construction and renovation work had to be stopped.

The chairman explained that the date was pushed back by two months as it allowed more time for the situation to stabilise.

The hawker centre was last closed 18 years ago in 2002.

It shuttered for six months as it was undergoing a major renovation.
