It’s 27 September 2019, and you know what that means:
It’s the birthday of our beloved Jacques-Benigne Bossuet, famed French bishop and writer!
Born in Dijon, France (d.1704), the French bishop practised his craft in the 1600s and enlightened many with his works. But perhaps most importantly…
You probably have no idea who the hell this guy is. And me too actually.
And so, let’s look at some other mainstream birthday boys and girls instead, just so that we can feel clever on this hazy afternoon.
Like Google and its 21st birthday party, for example.
Google is 21 Years Old Today & Many People Are Googling Google
Google might have been used for many, many purposes over the years ranging from pure academics to questionable “academics”, but the fact remains that just before today;
It was technically underage.
So yes peeps, you’ve all been abusing a minor. The horror.
But hey, let’s not gloss over burdensome history, because today’s a special occasion. Lest you haven’t latched on by now, here’s the big revelation:
Google turns 21 today!!
And to highlight the special, special day, Google has introduced an artistic depiction of its humble origins…
All laid square in a special doodle.
27 September 1998.
Thank goodness they did it, or we would’ve had to rely on Yahoo! for search results.
Oh the horror.
Hey Google, Where’s The Birthday Party?
And it seems that people are really excited about it too. I mean;
Just look at the number of people searching for it!
With an astounding 100K+ people Googling Google just in Singapore… on Google, you can be sure of one thing.
People love Google, definitely.
Like 100K peeps? That has to be a record.
Actually, if you look at the trending searches today, the top three Google searches are all Google: “Google”, “Google search” and “Sundar Pichai” (Google’s CEO).
A Brief History
For those unaware, Google was founded by two Stanford Ph.D. students, Sergey Brin and Lawrence (Larry) Page, 21 years ago on September 1998. The pair invented the search engine in their dormitories at Stanford in California, and had published a paper about launching a prototype of a large-scale search engine.
And lest you’re curious, Google wasn’t simply a random name they plucked off randomenamegenerator.net too.
“We chose our systems name, Google, because it is a common spelling of googol, or 10100 and fits well with our goal of building very large-scale search engines,” they wrote in their paper.
Also, Google’s official birthday hasn’t always been 27 September 2019. Until 2005, the website celebrated its birthday on 7 September, but it has since marked up its birth date to 8 September, 26 September and more recently, 27 September.
Yah, they’re Google, so hey can anyhowly change their birthday if they want.
According to Indiatoday, Google operates all over the world in over 100 languages today, and answers trillions of search queries each year. And to think that just 21 years ago, it started out like this:
A success story in its finest form?
Definitely.
