Every road user holds an important responsibility to follow traffic rules, signs, and signals. But things do not always go our way. Unforeseen circumstances emerge and the road condition may become hazardous.
Best case scenario? We’re able to buffer time and adopt defensive driving once a potential hazard has been identified.
Worst case scenario? We’re not able to react to danger in due course. Which is why accidents unfortunately happen, like in this case.
GrabFood Rider Blinded by Sun’s Glare
On Monday (17 Jan), a GrabFood rider named Luqman Sha uploaded a video on TikTok to recount his incident.
In the video, Sha was riding his motorcycle on the right lane of Marina Coastal Drive.
As he was about to negotiate a bend, his vision got dazzled by the sun’s glare.
Funny how the background music chosen for the TikTok video was “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd. How apt.
Upon realising that his vision was deprived, Sha initially wanted to keep a safe distance behind a van that was in front of him.
He then proceeded to use his left hand to provide some shade to his eyes so he could have better vision.
According to Sha, he mentioned that he would typically wear polarised shades while riding in such adverse conditions.
But the shades were broken the day before the incident occurred.

Grabfood Rider Crashed Onto Illegally Parked Lorry
However, in a turn of events, the van in front of him decided to switch lanes to the middle lane.
Before Sha had the time to react and slow down, he unfortunately crashed into the back of a lorry.
He was then thrown off by the motorcycle onto the road.
But it didn’t stop there…
Shortly after, he got hit on the head by a taxi as he lay on the floor groaning in pain.
In the captions, Sha thanked passerby who lent a helping hand while he passed out. He also questioned why three huge lorries could park illegally on the right side of the road.
You must be wondering, what could the impact amount to from this accident?
Well, Sha had to endure the following:
- a few broken teeth
- a broken finger
- bruises
- body aches
- probably some mental shock as well
According to Sha, a week has passed but “everything still hurts”. He also added that it has only been a month since he got his bike out of the workshop.
While we can’t remove the sun from our solar system with a new policy, I’m sure there is a way to discourage lorries from parking on the right side of the road #justsaying
