It’s time for yet another discussion on the debatable PMD ban that hit in November, leaving many riders ready to hold their pitchforks and burn down the government while riding their PMDs into battle.

The ban was put in place to curb the problem of errant riders causing multiple accidents and deaths while whizzing around recklessly on sidewalks and even roads.

If you’ve forgotten about it, here’s a video we’ve done:

However, these people don’t take no for an answer and continued to rebel against the law.

Some of them are still riding PMDs everywhere as a statement that they found a loophole, like on drain covers and let’s not forget the guy who rode his PMD on the top of a walkway shelter (still WTF).

Many also criticised the ban in the name of being advocates for the poor food deliverymen who rely on PMDs to deliver food to people across wide areas as quickly as possible.

But they’re forgetting something – just like we forgot what life was like without a handphone and what we used to communicate before the invention of one (pagers, anyone?).

Before PMDs even became a popular form of transport in Singapore, food deliverymen actually used bicycles to do their jobs.

What a foreign concept!

However, going back to the past and using bicycles may not be the worst idea, but could also bring about further benefits, as proven by this GrabFood rider.

Lost Weight From Riding Bicycle

One inspiring deliveryman decided to make the best of a bad deal.

Muhammad Imran (no, not that Imran), 34, did his deliveries on a PMD before but made the switch to doing deliveries on a bike earlier on in February, due to the growing public concern about the usage of PMDs.

At that time, he weighed a hefty 120kg, and making the decision to switch to a bicycle wasn’t easy at all for it was difficult for him to make it far on one.

Imran shared how he was very unfit at the time and would only be able to do two deliveries before feeling extremely tired and give up, despite earning only $10 a day.

However, he was persistent and kept going.

Nine months later, Imran was able to increase his delivery count to 25, about the same amount that he used to do on a PMD.

His daily bicycle rides across town actually allowed him to exercise at the same time, and he managed to lose a whopping 30kg!

Amazing!

Three months is sufficient time to adjust and get used to riding a bicycle, Imran advised to other riders, for it only took him four to five months before he was able to as well.

“Riders should give themselves some time, and think of it as a way to increase your fitness and also to help you to be [healthier compared] to those who are just riding around on e-scooters,” he added.

Riding Bicycles Help A Lot

According to UK fitness professional Jane Wake, she found that making deliveries on bicycles is the number one job in the world that burns the most fat. It’s a good cardio workout, and riders would be able to improve their balance as well as their core and leg strength at the same time.

“Carrying orders from door to door whilst negotiating steps and staircases will improve agility, speed, upper and lower body strength which is why this is really so good for the whole body,” she said.

It’s also been shown in other cases of deliverymen losing extreme amounts of weight purely by making deliveries on bicycles – it’s actually a pretty good win-win situation in which you can lose weight while gaining money and muscle at the same time.

So if you’re a delivery rider who still feels that PMDs are more convenient for your deliveries, take a look on the bright side of using a bicycle instead because it may improve your fitness too!
