For those who work out, burpees are probably one of the most hated exercises. It is considered to be an advanced calisthenic move, so it’s critical to do it properly to avoid injury.
To execute a burpee, you first begin in an upright position. Place your hands on the ground and kick your legs back into a plank position. Then, return to a squat position and stand back up.
By doing so, it aims to build muscle strength and endurance in both your lower and upper boy.
It is said that a person will get much better in shape by doing 100 burpees per day.
However, for his Brazilian man living in Singapore, he decided that he’s gonna do much more. And I really mean, a whole lot more.
Singapore-based Brazilian sets Guinness Record for most burpees
On Monday (Jul 19), 35-years-old Cassiano Rodrigues Laureano set a new Guinness World Record. He completed 951 burpees in just an hour.
You read that right. What a champ.
Born in Sao Gabriel municipality in southern Brazil, Laureano, who is also a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, said he was driven by a promise made to his niece, Rebeca.
According to The Straits Times, he did this in a fundraising effort for Rebeca who was born last year with severe heart disease.
Laureano hasn’t met his family ever since he moved to Singapore in May 2019. Unsure of when he’ll get to see them, the Guinness World Record holder felt like it’s the only thing he could do to help.
With the pandemic, many families have been forced to be separated by distance.
Fell short of his target
After completing the record at Tricolor Fight Team gym, Laureano mentioned that “I’m tired”. Apparently, it didn’t go as smoothly as he thought it would go.
Initially, Laureano had aimed for 1,000 burpees. His target fell short due to a leg injury sustained two days before the attempt. Nine whole months of training had been done before challenging the record.
Still, 951 burpees in 60 minutes is a huge feat!
Earlier this year, the previous world record was held by Nick Anapolsky. The Canadian CrossFit athlete carried out 879 chest-to-ground burpees in an hour.
With his achievement, Laureano wants to set an example for everyone blessed to be born with whole hearts. He also mentioned that he desires to inspire people to lead healthier lifestyles and muster the discipline needed to achieve their fitness goals.

Bizarre Guinness World Records Held by Singapore
Apart from just burpees, Singapore has held some of the most bizarre Guinness World Record titles.
In 2007, Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited created the longest chains of safety helmets. Around 18,000 pieces of them were placed side by side on Siloso Beach. The chain was about 5,664m-long to be precise.
We also had the largest curry cooked ever before. In 2015, the Indian Chefs and Culinary Associated cooked curry that weighed 15.34 tonnes.
That’s four times the weight of an adult hippo.
And probably one of those rare times where too many cooks don’t spoil the broth. I mean- curry.
