If you’ve been on the news recently, you’d be aware of the drama brewing within the British royal family.
The British are known for their tea after all. It looks like this one might be the hottest tea of them all.
And no, it’s not the rice comment by their former butler.
Apparently, getting married into the royal family isn’t as beautiful as you’d imagined, as Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle learnt.
From being driven suicidal to racist attacks, here’s what you need to know about the interview that gave you a glimpse at the real-life version of House of Cards.
Driven to Suicidal Thoughts
In a two-hour interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, opened up about their struggles living in the royal family.
Meghan said that her life in the prestigious family was so “desolated” she started having suicidal thoughts.
Prince Harry has openly talked about mental health, grief and other issues for years, a subject considered taboo for royalty.
When Meghan had suicidal thoughts, she was unable to confide in her husband as she felt too ashamed.
She was allegedly refused inpatient care as well when she sought it.
When she had asked a senior royal for the option, she was rebuffed and told “it wouldn’t be good for the institution”.
She had navigated life in the palace with Prince Harry as her only support.
The couple also confirmed that the rest of the family did not give them enough support.
Racist Attacks
Even right at the beginning, Meghan was attacked viciously by the tabloids for her race.
Meghan Markle, a mixed-race American woman, was an actress before she married into the royal family.
The question of her race might have also influenced the decision to not grant their son, Archie, a title.
Nor was there security arrangements made for him.
Apparently, the concern of how dark their son’s skin would be was brought up in conversations as well.
Royal Family Did Not Change Untrue Narratives
According to Meghan, the tabloid stories came en masse and yet, the royal family failed to correct the narrative.
She was described as a diva, accused of bullying the staff and apparently had bad relations with her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton.
They were not true, Meghan asserted, and yet the royal family did nothing to correct the misconception.
She pointed out the incident where she allegedly made Kate’s daughter cry over a bridesmaid dress.
She clarified that it was Kate who made her cry, and she even sent flowers to Meghan over the incident.
The royal family is willing to lie to protect other family members but not tell the truth to protect her and her husband, Meghan revealed.
Prince Harry Left Alone
It’s not just Meghan who bore the brunt of the royal family’s dissatisfaction.
Prince Harry, too, had his fair share of disappointments.
According to The New York Times, members of the royal family receive money from the family’s treasury each year for carrying out official engagements.
However, even when he first introduced Meghan to the family, it seemed like the arrangement was “jeopardised”.
Some members of his family had suggested that she continue acting because they “wouldn’t be able to pay for her”.
When he and his wife begged the family to pay for security for them and their son, they were refused.
After the couple moved to the United States, they were allegedly cut off financially, at least for the first half of 2020.
Since the couple’s decision to “take a step back” from their senior royals duties back in 2020, it was speculated that there was a rift between Meghan and Prince Harry, and the rest of the royal family.
Then, they’ve seemingly reached their decision without consulting with other royals, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince William.
Prince Charles
When Prince Charles walked Meghan down the aisle to his son, the world adored him for being such a good father and father-in-law.
Things, however, changed drastically in the one year after the wedding.
According to Prince Harry, his father had chosen not to take his calls, and to ask them to put it into writing when they talked about stepping back from the role of senior royals.
Prince Harry’s disappointment was exacerbated by the fact that his father went through something similar, with Princess Diana being hounded by the news media.
Princess Diana had died in a car crash when trying to flee from paparazzi photographers.
His father is now taking his calls again, Prince Harry said, but they still have “a lot to work through”.
British PM Says He Don’t Want To Be Involved
With such a high-profile case, everyone’s looking to see what consequences would take place.
Well, British prime minister (PM) Boris Johnson has made his stance clear: He will not be drawn into the drama.
“I have always had the highest admiration for the Queen and the unifying role she plays in our country and across the Commonwealth.
“As for all other matters to do with the royal family I have spent a long time now not commenting on royal family matters and I don’t intend to depart from that today.”
Even when pressed, he replied that he believes that the best thing to do as PM is to “say nothing”.
Not everyone is contented to remain silent, however.
Zac Goldsmith, a mid-level minister of environmental and foreign affairs, took to Twitter to express his unhappiness with the couple’s move.
Not ‘Buckingham Palace’ – Harry’s family. Harry is blowing up his family.

Meanwhile, Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labour Party, said that the issues raised needs to be looked at carefully.
Because they are “allegations in relation to race and mental health”.
