Moving into your new BTO Flat soon? In this article, we’ll run through some things you should take note of when it comes to getting great internet connection around the house!
Locate the Fibre Termination point in your BTO Flat
All BTO flats should already be fibre-ready but just to confirm that, look out for something called the Fibre Termination Point (FTP) (Pictured below). Once confirmed, you’re all ready to sign on to a fibre broadband subscription!

Gearing up
Converting Telephone points to LAN points
One of the perks of a new BTO flat is that it comes ready with telephone points that can be easily converted into ethernet LAN points. Conversion comes at a reasonable cost of about SG$100 or less depending on the number of points and the process would usually take less than an hour.
You can use the ethernet LAN points to connect directly to your wired devices or simply plug in another router for additional Wi-Fi coverage.
Routers
Option 1: One good router
Sometimes all you need is one awesome router. If your home has nice a centralised layout with most rooms only one wall away from the router’s room, a single powerful router should do the trick.
Some recommended routers are the ASUS RT-AC88U or the ASUS RT-AC5300, these routers are designed for ultra fast speed not for extensive coverage, though – great if everything is centralised, but if you have a large floor-plan with lots of walls or levels blocking the router, you might want to consider Option 2.

Option 2: A few budget routers
A lot of ISPs give free routers as part as part of their fibre broadband plans or promotions, but depending on the size of your flat this might not be enough to provide optimal coverage around the house. To tackle this issue, we would recommend the use of an additional entry level router that can be used as an access point.
With an additional access point, you’ll have another point to broadcast your Wi-Fi signals, resulting in wider coverage within your house. Such routers can be easily purchased at any tech retail stores for about $200 or less depending on brand and performance.
Router placement in your BTO Flat
Now that you have done up your ethernet LAN points and gotten your router(s), it is time to look into the placement of your routers within your BTO flat as illustrated in the diagram below.

We hope the above tips will help to provide you with a great internet browsing experience in your new BTO flat, but if you still have any doubts or enquiries do feel free to leave a comment below!
