Some of us call it 21 dots (21点), which probably makes more sense since the target of the game is to get 21 points.

But for most of the world, they call it Blackjack, which is a total mystery as there is no obvious link between it and the game.

So why is it called blackjack?

Now that CNY is coming, here’s a nugget of information to impress your relatives and friends.

The origins of Blackjack have been hotly debated by the experts in the field and there wasn’t a single consensus on how it started. Some credited it to the Roman, others said the French created it.

Our take is, whoever created the game must have been too bored because honestly, without gambling, the game is really boring.

Apparently, at the very beginning, the game was called 21, other than the Spanish version, which is called ‘One and Thirty’ because their version required players to reach 31. Up until here, everything makes sense.

Turns out that when gambling was first legalised in Nevada, USA in 1931, the casinos thought that the game was too boring (we thought so too).

To spice things up, they added a new bonus. Those that drew a ‘Blackjack (Jack of spades or clubs)’, along with the Ace of Spades, would be given 10 times the return for their bets. This gained huge popularity among the people.

Later on, even though the casinos abolished that rule (maybe they lost a lot of money), the game continued to be called Blackjack up till today.

Doesn’t really make sense to call it Blackjack, right? Feel free to join us in calling it 21点 or ban luck from today onward, or better, stop playing it.

In fact, many casinos today add their own rules to the game to spice things up.

And also, is it just me, or are fewer people playing it nowadays?
