Here’s Why Netizens Are Angry Over the Monitor Lizard Found in SMRT Train Depot

Once again, SMRT has made the headlines again. I can’t help but wonder what kind of hex it is under.

I mean there is only so many mishaps a company can go through before it becomes obsolete.

But this time, it is something that is out of their control (to a certain extent).

So yesterday, Everyday SG posted a video on their Facebook and it went viral, garnering 266k views and 6,111 shares.

For those who have no clue what I am talking about, here is the video in question.

Monitor lizard found in SMRT train depot

WATCH: The moment a monitor lizard is forced out of an undercarriage of a train at an SMRT depot and dragged away by its tail.

Posted by Channel NewsAsia on Tuesday, 28 November 2017

This is from Channel NewsAsia, the same video which Everyday SG posted but for some weird reason, we can’t seem to embed the video from the latter.

What happened

The first 20 seconds is pretty boring and I was questioning my eyesight as I couldn’t see what those guys were prodding at.

And then I saw a pale white reptile of sorts manoeuvring itself swiftly through all the wires.

My first thought: What kind of dinosaur is this?

My second thought: Is it a Basilisk

And my third thought…

Well, I didn’t reach that point as the elusive animal finally came out of the undercarriage of the train.

Lo and behold, a white-skinned monitor lizard that resembles a dragon from Game of Thrones or Harry Potter (depending on which fandom you belong to).

Well, remember when I said earlier about how this incident is out of their control?

Well, I also added “to a certain extent” in parentheses for subtle emphasis.

So, when the monitor lizard came out, the video depicts two people still prodding at it with a rod and dustpan.

I hoped you had the audio on while watching cause they sounded way too excited for their own good—snickering and laughing as the poor lizard is trying to run as fast it could with its short legs.

It was also trying to retaliate (who wouldn’t when you’re being poked by random shit) but one of them quickly caught it by its tail and dragged it on the floor like a goddamn mop.

Channel NewsAsia believes that this incident happened at Bishan depot.

Netizens weren’t too happy

There was a deluge of comments that expressed their concern for the monitor lizard and disdain for how the men in the video handled the situation.

Another comment that really makes you think.

And then we have this food for thought comment.

This guy just found out the cause of all the breakdowns SMRT experienced.

ACRES stepped in

Animal Concerns Research & Education Society’s (ACRES) deputy chief executive Kalai Balakrishnan said that the handling of the lizard should have been left to experienced wildlife rescue personnel, Channel NewsAsia reported.

He also mentioned that the lizard can get stressed when there are too many people, using sticks to probe it and dragging on its tail.

“This could also potentially harm the lizard and cause the animal to get very defensive, which may result in someone getting bitten,” he added.

Thoughts

I mean they could have handled it with tact instead of dragging it by its tail which I think is equivalent to humans being dragged by their hair.

We are not from the Flintstones era, people!

And whoever is playing Jumanji, please stop!

If you come across any wild animal, don’t try to be like Steve Irwin (we all know how that played out) and call ACRES wildlife rescue hotline—9783 7782.
