Here’s the Correct Way to Dispose of Your Used SAF Uniform

Currently an NSman who’ve just completed all your reservist obligations, but not sure what to do with your SAF uniform? Please don’t sell it away to the karang guni (rag-and-bone) man or throw them away.

There is a proper way to dispose of your uniforms, especially when there are more places to return them now.

More places to return used SAF Uniforms

Good news for all NSmen out there, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will be setting up more collection points for used SAF uniforms. It’ll be more convenient for you to dispose of them now.

The disposal bins will be set up at entrances of selected camps near populated areas in the next two to three months. These bins will have a “one-way, non-return valve”, which means once returned, considered returned. You’ll never get them back if you change your mind.

More disposal bins will also be placed at the eMarts to make things easier for them to return old equipment. This is on top of the currently situated ones at SAF eMarts islandwide, as well as at the Army Logistics Base in Old Choa Chu Kang Road.

Smuggling Incident

You might be wondering, why the sudden convenience to the NSmen? Well, there is a reason behind it. This actually follows an incident of SAF military apparel being smuggled to Batam last November.

That’s right, it included both the pixelated combat uniform which was introduced by the SAF in 2008, as well as the older variant, which has green, black and brown camouflage patterns.

What are the suspicions? According to Senior Minister of State for Defence Maliki Osman, while investigations by the Indonesian Navy are still ongoing, it seems that the “actions of unauthorised parties” had led to the uniforms being smuggled to Batam.

So lesson learnt, please do only dispose of your uniform at authorised locations. This will really reduce opportunities for unauthorised vendors to obtain and sell used SAF uniforms. By the way, NSmen are not allowed to sell any army equipment issued to them, under the Singapore Law. So the best bet is just to dispose of it safely!

You won’t want someone wearing a uniform with your nametag committing some crime, would you?
