Mention the place “Kallang” and the first image that comes to mind are blocks of grey factories with boring canteen food.

But trust me, it’s more than that. Let someone (specifically me) who lives in the vicinity, frequently jogs around the area (main roads and ulu lanes) and have a memory for good ole food recommend you to the good places.

Ugly Cake Shop

While “ugly” piqued my curiosity, “cake” simply lasso-ed me into the shop. Not sure exactly what I want, I simply took the highly recommended 6-piece box which gave me two of each flavour: Big Daddy, Sally, and Juliana.

Big Daddy is simply chocolate heaven in a cupcake, Sally the perfect harmony of smooth peanut buttery goodness and dark chocolate, and Juliana provides an awesome salty break between Daddy and Sally.

Better yet, the cupcakes are not too sweet or cloying but “wholesome” because Ugly avoids artificial flavours, colours, fondant, and gum paste!

They are tasty sin minus the chemical sin. And as you feed your confection addiction, you are also feeding the hungry kids in Timor-Leste too!

Cheok Kee Boneless Braised Duck

This is literally the only duck rice stall I patronize in my neighbourhood.

My reason is simple: generous serving of rice cooked in flavorful braised broth, slices of boneless soft braised duck, and hot herbal duck soup all for only $3.50.

Frankly, give the dark gravy a try and you will not regret your choice because it adds more ducky flavour to your set meal and provides a satisfying aftertaste.

Little Monkeys Cafe

In my opinion, the chicken chop is a little pricey and a little dry, their cheeseburger is the genuine stuff.

Although the burger’s presentation is as unflattering as that of Macdonald’s squashed-looking ones, the mundane-ness of the burger allows its ingredients to shine.

Juicy and flavour-packed patty, well-melted cheese, fresh greens, and perfectly caramelized onions (I am very particular about caramelized onions because they are a basic ingredient that either makes or breaks the dish).

This burger is rightly the key to gastronomic heaven.

Chilli-crab

Despite my mild seafood allergy, I love chili crabs in almost any form and willing to risk it.

Never have I imaged that Olivo is able to transform the inconvenient and messy but tasty chilli crab into a burger! The patty’s crispy crust simply locks the chilli crab’s moisture, freshness, and heat within.

Much as I like the burger a lot, it is really quite expensive at around $24.

For those who love eating healthy, The Green Bucket is my recommendation to you. Serves are in Small ($6.90), Medium ($7.90), and Large ($9.90).

Small and Medium have one base, one protein, three toppings, and one dressing, while the large has two protein.

My personal favourite combination: sweet potato, broccoli, button mushroom, cherry tomatoes, smoked duck, and honey mustard.
