For years, the Grand Theft Auto series has enthralled many with its reckless blend of high-octane action, ‘bowling pins’ and seeming lack of consideration for worldly affairs.
Truly, it was a spectacle. Albeit in a twisted sense.
Yet, as entertaining as the series has proved to be, one can’t help but be glad that it’s just a game. After all…
People have gone to jail for less, in real life.
31YO Arrested After High-Speed Chase That Involves Driving Against Traffic & Lots of Police Cars
It seems that it was only a matter of time before an instance from the game materialised in real life.
Though honestly, I did not expect Singapore to be the one to ‘kena’, considering how it is one of the safest places on Earth.
According to The Straits Times, an early morning, GTA-esque car chase from the Central Expressway (CTE) to Canberra Street has led to the arrest of a 31-year-old driver on Saturday (12 September).
His male passenger, however, is still at large.
Apparently, traffic police officers were patrolling along the CTE towards Seletar Expressway at around 1.10 a.m., when they witnessed a driver steering at a rather slow speed on the extreme right lane.
As per customary, an officer tried to flag down the driver for a routine check.
The driver refused and instead sped off.
Needless to say, the officers gave chase, and a real-life, high-octane car chase soon occurred.
In a social media video that has since gone viral, a white hatchback can be seen driving against traffic at a high speed.
On the other side of the road, at least three vehicles, including a car and two motorcycles, could be seen chasing it.
According to ROADS.sg, the hatchback went dangerously close to other vehicles during its escapade.

Busted
‘Thrilling’ as the car chase may have been, it all came to a literal standstill when the fleeing car inadvertently mounted a kerb in Canberra Street and went colliding into a tree.
As a certain game would preach… it was busted.
The male driver was subsequently arrested and was later sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in a conscious state.
On the other hand, his compatriot managed to flee the scene after dashing towards the surrounding HDB blocks.
Apparently, dogs from the K-9 canine were brought in after to smell the car out.
Seeking His Whereabouts
According to the news report, the driver was arrested for dangerous driving, driving without a valid driving licence, and suspected drug-related offences.
As for the male passenger, the police are looking for him to assist with investigations.
Police investigations are currently ongoing.
And with that said, I would advise everyone to stay on the right side of the law. After all, the reality is very different from Grand Theft Auto.
For one, the men in blue are much more proficient than the ones in the game. And for two…
You don’t restart from a police station when you’re ‘done’.
