The solution for shortage of masks? Make your own masks.

And we’re not just talking about sewing a mask one by one. That’s yesterday’s news.

Hong Kong Man Starts Surgical Mask Production Factory From Scratch Within Two Weeks

The man, Tong who is a filmmaker, explained that he decided to produce masks because “it’s faster to do it rather than wait for the Government.”

And Tong managed to begin his business from scratch in just two short weeks.

Tong and a few of his friends invested a large sum of money in the surgical mask manufacturing industry in order to produce surgical masks.

In total, they spent a whopping HKD 5 million (~S$896,892) in order to gather the resources which included raw materials, machines and labour costs.

They’ve since clarified that they’ve funded the whole businesses using their own money and are not supported by any political party or organisation.

Their choice of location for their factory was once a food processing factory and is located in Tuen Mun, spanning 7,000 sq feet.

According to HK Apple Daily, around 80-100 masks can be produced per minute. If it runs for 24 hours, up to 144,000 masks can be produced in a day seh.

The production line is already in operation and is undergoing a testing phase which began on 16 February.

Selling Each Mask For Around S$0.20

Prices for the masks are pretty reasonable too, unlike some other retailers… *cough*:

Tong said that he will sell one mask for HKD$1 (~S$0.20) and is also considering creating two higher quality versions that will be priced at HKD$1.50 and HKD$2.

He also has plans to donate the first batch of masks to those who are in need of them, such as medical professionals.

The masks will reportedly go on sale in early March once it has passed the relevant tests and will be sold online.

Well, we hope his business will die.

Because we hope that by March, no one would need masks anymore and COVID-19 would be contained.
