Some things just go well together, and some don’t – like you and your toxic ex.

What happens when wood and fire come together, then?

Just like how McSpicy reacts with your body…

It’s safe to say that the result will be nothing less than explosive.

Hotel 81 Room Catches Fire

On the fateful day of 5 May 2021, 40-year-old Yasslee Rusdi walked into the Selegie branch of Hotel 81, wanting to check into a room at about 5:40pm.

Although the room he booked was a non-smoking one, he was not going to let that stop him.

Yasslee proceeded to smoke at least half a packet throughout his time in the room.

He also left three still-lit cigarettes on the bed frame – and you know what happens next.

When he left the room at about 11pm, the cigarettes were still lit and left unattended.

Smoke from the room triggered the fire alarm, alerting the front desk clerk, Mr Alvin Quek, to check the room after other guests called to inform him that they smelled smoke.

Upon arriving at Yasslee’s room, Mr Quek saw smoke billowing out from beneath the door to the room, but was unable to open the door fully due to heavy objects propped against it.

He attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher, but it was of little help.

Eventually, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was called to the scene and managed to put out the fire with an internal reel jet.

Mr Quek and another hotel guest also had to be sent to the Singapore General Hospital due to the inhalation of smoke.

Pleaded Guilty And Sent To Jail

Not only was Yasslee smoking in the room, but he may have been smoking other things than nicotine as well.

On 7 May, two days after the fire incident, Yasslee was arrested by the police.

They found that he was in possession of drug-related utensils, including a glass pipe, with methamphetamine found in his urine.

Yasslee pleaded guilty in court on 14 September to one count each of rashly causing a fire, consumption of methamphetamine and possessing drug-related utensils.

As a result, he will be sent to jail for a year and three months.

Causing fires as a result of a rash act can lead to up to 18 months in jail and fined.

Meanwhile, consuming methamphetamine can land someone in jail for up to 10 years with a fine of up to S$20,000.

Don’t Smoke On The Bed

If you weren’t already aware, smoking on the bed may be comfortable, but the consequences of this kind of comfort may be dire.

Just earlier in March, there was a man who passed away in his home due to a huge blaze, allegedly because he fell asleep on his bed while smoking.
