Singaporeans live for drama… what else are we supposed to do when there is so limited entertainment?
Wherever you look on the internet, you can find some kind of drama to comment on. In particular, Geylang seems to be a hotspot for all sorts of dramatic tussles and fights.
Just in the year 2018 alone, several fights broke out along the streets of Geylang that were serious enough to appear online.
For example, in November last year, four women were filmed fighting before being broken up by a passer-by, while others simply stood by to enjoy the show.
There were all the elements of a good cat fight: hair pulling, rolling on the road and some unintended flashing:
In December, 3 men engaged in a dangerous brawl that resulted in beer bottles being thrown and bystanders having to protect themselves from flying shattered glass shards:
Many netizens commented on the videos, calling for stricter penalties to be met out, in order to discourage fighting. They also worried about the safety of the involved parties and bystanders.
Recently, a well-intentioned man in Geylang got attacked, and for doing a good deed.
What Happened
26 year-old Liu JunBin was working at a hotel counter along Lorong 4 in Geylang on 26 January 2019 when an uncle with a man supporting an unconscious woman entered the hotel, asking for a room at about 4:45 a.m. Liu could smell alcohol coming off the uncle.
Noticing the unconscious woman and, suspicious of their intentions and worried for her, Liu lied, saying that there weren’t any available rooms.
This infuriated the uncle, who began shouting at Liu. In response, Liu shouted back at the uncle, angering him even further. The uncle said, “nobody raises their voice at me.”
OhHh, old strawberry~
Picking up a copper decorative lion off the counter top, the uncle struck Liu on the head with it. Liu began bleeding profusely and his eye started to swell. He said, “The copper lion was around 10cm. No other staff was around and other guests at the scene could not react in time. After the uncle left. I called my manager, who then arrived at the hotel and called the police.”
Liu suffered a 2 cm wound on his eyebrow from the attack.
Two days later, the uncle returned to try and settle the matter privately. He apologised to Liu and offered him $500 as compensation. However, they decided to leave the matter to the police.
The uncle was arrested and charged in court for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.
Netizens lauded the man, saying that he did the right thing, most even thanking him.
While this incident is disheartening—a Good Samaritan getting physically hurt while trying to protect someone—it shows us that chivalry isn’t dead in Singapore.
And $500 can’t buy integrity #justsaying
(He should offer $5 million lah)
