In recent years, residents have complained of irresponsible road behaviour, with many calling for the registration of bicycles and licensing of cyclists.
Such a rule was actually in place since before our independence, but it was discontinued in 1982.
Invariably, whenever an accident involving a cyclist occurs, the same questions are always asked.
Especially when the cyclist appears to be in the wrong.
Cyclist Thinks He Can Outride a Bus; Got Hit by It Instead
A video of an accident involving a bus and cyclist is making the rounds online, angering netizens.
Shared by SG Road Vigilante on Facebook on 7 Aug, it already has been viewed over 147,000 times.
The incident reportedly took place at a junction at Hougang Avenue 9 at around 9.49am.
At the beginning of the video, a man can be seen crossing a road at the junction.
Shortly after he reaches the other side, an SBS bus – service 109 – starts moving off.
Just as the bus starts moving, a cyclist appears from the other side and starts crossing the road on his bicycle.
Now, as any other person would predict in this situation, if the cyclist keeps moving, he’s going to get hit by the bus, right?
The green lights also started blinking on the other side, meaning it was likely on when the bus moved off.
So the cyclists had two options:
- Recognize that it was illegal to cross, and wait till the walking green man comes on, or at least until the road is clear
- Literally anything but dash across the bus in the hope that he’d be able to outpace it
So naturally, the rider dashed across the bus.
He was knocked down as a result, and that’s where the video ends.
Here’s the full video:
Green Light Was On; Cyclist is Doing Well
Speaking to Mothership, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at SBS Transit Tammy Tan said that the green light was on for vehicles when the bus moved off.
She added that the cyclist who was knocked down in the collision did not suffer any serious injuries, and declined to be taken to the hospital.
“We have been in touch with him to extend our concern and have been assured that he is doing well,” she added.
Netizens’ Reaction
Netizens were certainly displeased with the cyclist’s actions, pointing out that he was in the wrong for crossing when he was not supposed to.
Many also seemed concerned about the bus driver.
“Hope that the bus driver is okay! Very irresponsible of the cyclist to endanger other people’s lives and livelihood!” one commenter said.
“This is clearly the fault of cyclist and by penalising the driver would discourage people from taking this occupation as career,” said another.
Some called for a review of the current rules in place, due to the spate of accidents involving cyclists.
Back in April, Senior Minister of State for Transport Chee Hong Tat had said that the rules around cycling on the roads would be reviewed by the Active Mobility Advisory Panel.
One of the possible measures studied will be the mandatory licensing of cyclists and registration of bicycles.
