In the old days, if you were in a lift and saw someone rushing to get it, you’d hold it open, flash a smile, and wait for them to get in.
But things are a little different during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Every human on the street seems like a walking coronavirus bomb, waiting to infect unsuspecting victims.
At a time like this, when many are getting infected with the disease, you can never be too cautious.
However, if you don’t handle the situation the right way, you can come off as rude and unpleasant.
Woman in Hougang HDB Refused to Share Lift with Delivery Rider Due to COVID-19 Concerns
A food delivery rider has taken to social media to air his grievances over an encounter with a woman at an HDB lift lobby.
The rider shared a video of the incident, recorded on his body camera, in a Facebook post yesterday (23 July).
The video starts out with the rider retrieving a customer’s order from his bag.
He then waits for the lift with another woman in a floral red top.
As the lift doors open, a man and what is likely his son exit the lift, and the rider rushes to get in, presumably hoping to make his delivery quickly so he can work on his next order.
However, the woman in the red top cuts in front of him, saying “excuse me”, before entering the lift. She then holds her hand out to stop the rider from entering, and says “You wait for next one.”
“Why?” the rider asks repeatedly.
“I don’t share lift,” the woman responded as she stood at the edge of the lift.
When the rider asks why, she gives a non-answer: “I come here first, okay?”. She then asks the rider to release the lift button, so she can go up.
The rider explains that he needs to make a delivery, but the woman asks him to use the other lift instead.
Noting that the rider has a camera, the woman reiterates that she doesn’t share lifts, now explaining that it’s because we’re going through a “pandemic”.
She lets out one last “excuse me”, before the lift doors close.
“You’re horrible, you know?”, the rider says to the woman.
Netizens’ Reaction
As with any issue on the internet, netizens were divided.
Some pointed out that if the woman really was concerned about contracting COVID-19, she wouldn’t have gone out in the first place.
However, some defended the woman, saying there are people out there who want to protect themselves during the pandemic, and that we simply have to respect that.
According to one netizen, the incident took place at Hougang Avenue 8, a site where several COVID-19 cases were previously discovered.
Be Cautious, But Gracious Too
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to protect yourself at such a time, of course. If the lady had let the delivery rider take the lift and offered to take the next one herself, I doubt the rider would have kicked up a stink about it.
Contrary to what some think, it is possible to be cautious and respectful to others at the same time.
We just have to try a little harder.
