Losing weight isn’t easy.

Even after you managed to drag yourself out of bed and force yourself to go out for a run, you come back to find a delicious, creamy-looking chocolate cake in the fridge calling your name.

10 minutes later, your stomach is full of chocolate but you feel empty and unsatisfied.

Why do I keep doing this?

Then you come across a magical product that purports to help you lose weight without any actual exercise.

If this sounds too good to be true, well, that’s because it usually is.

HSA Warns About 2 Weight-Loss Products Sold in S’pore That Contain Banned Substance

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has warned the public about the use of two weight-loss products after they were found to contain harmful substances.

The products, Serifa Beauty Solidmolid and LKS Coffee, both contain sibutramine, a banned substance that could increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and cause insomnia and hallucinations, according to The Straits Times.

Despite this, both products were advertised as slimming products containing natural ingredients.

Red Flags

According to ST, both products were marketed as having accelerated weight-loss effects.

The makers of Serifa Beauty Solidmolid claim it’s able to “burn fats up to 10X”.

Similarly, LKS Coffee claimed to be able to “accelerate fat burning”, “promote metabolism” and “achieve the perfect slimming effect”.

Now, if someone on the street came up to you selling a cup of coffee saying it could “accelerate fat burning” you’d run away and promptly call the police.

Retailers of dangerous weight-loss products usually make exaggerated claims to lure unsuspecting buyers.

But, as Mayo Clinic says, there’s no magic bullet for losing weight.

The most effective way to lose weight is by eating a healthy low-calorie diet and being more physically active.

Reader: But why do that when I can just drink some coffee and lose weight while watching YouTube videos?

But I just said that- because it will- you know what nevermind.

Issued Warnings to Sellers

HSA isn’t being overly cautious or anything.

Consumers who took LKS Coffee reported sudden weight loss and loss of appetite and one person who tried Serifa Beauty Solidmolid experienced a rapid heartbeat.

Tests by the HSA revealed that both products contained high levels of sibutramine.

HSA has issued warnings to the sellers and directed the website administrators to take down the listings.

Both products were sold on Shopee, Carousell, as well as Facebook and Instagram, reported ST.

The public should stop taking these products immediately, HSA said. If you’ve consumed these products and feel unwell, please see a doctor.

Three Similar Products Listed By HSA

Just a week ago, three other weight-loss products were found to contain potent medicinal ingredients, reported The Straits Times.

Two of the products – Clinic K and RO Slim Booster – both contain sibutramine as well.

The other, Rozell Detox, contains a potent laxative sennoside.

Just these names alone should be enough to scare you.

According to the HSA, some consumers of these products have experienced side effects that include:

  • rapid heartbeat
  • dizziness
  • breathlessness
  • nausea

Many of these products claim to contain only natural ingredients, but in most cases, that’s a blatant lie.

So, how can you tell which weight-loss products are safe?

Well, you can’t.

Generally, if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

If a friend promises you millions of dollars if you just invest in his new Oreo Shampoo, it’s probably a bad idea.

If a man on the phone promises you a brand new car if you just tell him your banking information, it’s probably a bad idea.

And, if a weight-loss product promises that you’ll lose weight unnaturally fast, it’s probably a bad idea.

Don’t be seduced by the exaggerated claims of these products. The only thing you might end up losing is good health.
