If you were old enough to watch television in the 1980s and understand what was being said, you might be familiar with Ng Aik Leong, better known as Huang Yiliang.
The former actor was known for his roles in the Channel 8 television serials Holland V and Double Happiness.
He also won the Best Supporting Actor Star Awards three times during his 20-year career.
He left the local industry a decade ago to became a movie producer, a film-director, and a movie actor, saying he needed a different challenge.
Years after his departure from the local scene, Huang has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Former Actor Huang Yi Liang Claims Trial for Allegedly Assaulting His Employee
Today (27 July), Huang claimed trial to one charge of assaulting his employee, a Bangladeshi worker, with a metal scraper at the Singapore Islamic Hub.
His explanation? That the victim had asked to be disciplined.
Here’s what reportedly happened.
On the day of the incident, the worker, Jahidul said he had been working on the vents at the back of the canteen stalls at the Singapore Islamic Hub, a religious campus.
At some point, Huang, his employer, scolded him and allegedly hit him with a metal scraper, striking his abdomen and head.
A security officer who came to investigate the commotion saw the victim and heard him make “a crying tone”, according to CNA.
The officer took photos of the abuse as evidence.
Huang reportedly intervened at this point and called the victim “stupid” because he didn’t know how to do his work.
The police were then called in.
Victim Asked To Be Disciplined
Huang, who was unrepresented and defended himself via a Mandarin interpreter, cross-examined the security officer in court, as well as the two officers who arrived on the scene.
He asked the security officer if he recalled him saying that Jahidul had “kept asking me to beat him to discipline him”, to which the security officer said he couldn’t.
“This worker kept touching his head, very painful. The injuries were not that serious but the pain he displayed appeared to be 100 times his injuries,” Huang said.
Huang asked if the officer recalled the victim exaggerating his injuries, and the officer said he could not answer the question.
“He was out to frame me,” Huang said.
One of the police officers who was cross-examined by Huang said that the victim seemed to be in distress, and was afraid of Huang.
When Huang claimed that Jahidul had exaggerated his pain, the officer said: “It was not in exaggeration”.
The other police officer who was interviewed said that on that fateful day, Huang initially claimed that no assault had taken place.
It was only later on that Huang admitted a scuffle had occurred, after Jahidul allegedly kept tying a raffia string on a pail incorrectly, reported Yahoo News.
The words “raffia string” might not be familiar to you but the image of it would be:
Huang said he tried to push the pail towards the victim, and this turned into a “push and pull” over the pail.
As for the metal scraper, Huang denied using it at all to assault the victim.
And once again, this is how a metal scraper looks like:
Victim Treated Me as a Father: Huang
The former actor said Jahidul treated him as a “father” and allowed him to use violence on the victim.
Wait, what?
“‘I treat you as a father, as a good teacher, I allow you to hammer me because I learn things so slow’,” said Huang. “That was what he (Jahidul) often said to me.”
Huang added that Jahidul had repeatedly said that he was a good boss.
Why does that sounds familiar?
Boss: Are you saying that I’m not a good boss?
Of course not.
Boss: Well, then I’m simply stating the facts.
That’s fine, I just wish you wouldn’t quote me directly on your LinkedIn page.
Previously Assaulted Someone Over Dog Poop
If this sounds like a deja vu, it’s because this isn’t Huang’s first brush with the law.
In 2012, the 59-year-old was fined $3,000 for assaulting a woman who failed to clean up after her dog.
Yes, he assaulted someone over dog poop.
Can Be Jailed Up to 7 Years
If the former actor is convicted of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon, he could be jailed for up to seven years and fined.
He also faces a second charge of affray, but that will only be dealt with after the current trial is over.
For now, it remains a Mystery as to whether Huang will be Behind Bars for the next few years.
