We’ve complained a lot about the stubborn minority of Singaporeans who are not adhering to the circuit breaker rules, but the majority are listening to the authorities and staying indoors.

This is why the local community spread has been stable for the last two weeks. Most of the cases reported in the last week or so are from dormitories, where numerous clusters have developed.

Not every country is as compliant, however. To some people, staying indoors is so unbearable that they’d rather go outside and risk contracting and spreading the contagious coronavirus.

Hundreds of People in the US Protest to End ‘Lockdown’ Rules After Trump Promises to Open The Country by 1 May

Hundreds of people protested on Saturday (18 Apr) in different cities across the US against the Covid-19 lockdowns, with President Trump echoing their sentiments.

Around 400 people gathered in Concord, New Hampshire either on foot or in their cars to challenge the notion that a lockdown is necessary for a state where with relatively few confirmed cases of Covid-19.

And over 250 people showed up in the Texas capital of Austin to protest, while a similar rally outside Maryland’s statehouse in Annapolis drew about 200 protesters.

But why exactly are they protesting?

“Numbers Are Not That Worrisome”

For one woman, Amira Abuzeid, staying at home is not necessary because the number of infections in her state is not high.

“I’m not a doctor but I’m an intelligent person who can do math and it looks like at the end of the day, these numbers are not that worrisome,” she said.

Here are a few things to consider though:

1) Actual doctors are telling us that staying and home and practising social distancing are necessary because this virus is highly contagious

2) Is it possible that the number of infections is currently low because there’s been a lockdown?

What many people don’t understand is that ending lockdowns too early can cause a second wave of the coronavirus to spread, which would mean we’d have to start lockdowns all over again.

Thankfully, the president and “leader of the free world” agrees with his medical experts, and will keep the lockdown open for as long as necess- oh wait no, he wants to reopen it soon too.

Peak Has Passed

President Donald Trump recently said the US has “passed the peak” of new coronavirus cases and plans to reopen states in phases.

“We’ll be the comeback kids, all of us,” the president said. “We want to get our country back.”

The US currently has 738,923 Covid-19 cases, with 39,015 deaths, both the highest numbers in the world.

Andrew Cuomo, however, the New York governor, said that Trump should stop watching TV and get back to work.

“Let’s keep emotion and politics out of this — and personal ego if we can,” he added. Many others have criticised Trump for his handling of the pandemic, though if you’ve watched his daily briefings, you’d know that he’s been praising himself.

There’s another reason so many Americans are against the lockdowns, however.

A Free Country

If there’s one thing everyone knows about America, it’s that they take their freedom seriously.

What other country would pair fried chicken with waffles doused in syrup and continue to allow guns despite numerous shootings?

“All over the country, a lot of people are saying, ‘We will do our part, but at the same time, this is supposed to be a free country,'” one protestor from New Hampshire said.

“When that gets transgressed, people start to say, ‘Wait a minute, this is wrong.'”

I don’t know about you, dear reader, but I’m more than happy to give up my freedom to move around for a few months if it means I’ll be able to live at least seven more decades.

Reader: Don’t you still drink 12 bubble teas a day?

How the hell did you know th- ok fine, five decades then.
