Money. That’s what our world is basically based around, at least in Singapore.
That’s the reason why we tend to undervalue (non-monetary meaning. Stop being so money-minded, damn it) many aspects of our society.
People tell me that being a lawyer, doctor, banker, or techie is more respected because they earn more money.
But it’s not like that. They are respected because their expertise makes our lives better. Not because they earn more money.
One of these professions is a stay-at-home parent. They have the responsibility of making sure future members of the society will turn out to be decent human beings.
If you’re a data person, you might want to know that children who receive parental care are mentally and physically healthier.
Sure, you could argue to hire a caretaker, but then you have to question if the child raised by someone else is really yours.
Ya, if you’re raised mostly by a maid, sorry dude (dudette?), the maid is your real mother.
But your existential crisis and my complains aside, a Thai man posted a tribute to his wife’s work as a stay-at-home parent on Facebook, which managed to receive more than 34k reactions and 32k shares as of writing.
CCTV collage of wife’s work at home
Along with the collage, he described that he usually looks at the CCTV to check on what his wife and child are doing.
It turns out, his wife does tasks non-stop for the whole day, leaving little time for rest.
Despite all these, she never raised any complaints.
“I have no words to describe my gratitude. Thank you for taking care of our child.”
“To the people who are tired at work and complain about your wife being comfortable at home raising kids. Think again, because it’s not easy. I think our jobs are not even half as tiring as our wives’.”

Netizens went on to praise him for his understanding of stay-at-home parents’ work.
Wife’s response to the positive reactions
In response to the post going viral with the positive reactions, the wife thanked everybody who followed and support them, along with showing everybody a close up of their baby. She was surprised at the overwhelming reactions.
And she had one more message to leave:
“Actually, mothers like us don’t want anything more than having a husband and family who understands and support what we do. That gives me the fuel and drive to continue doing it for the family. I am thankful for having a lovely husband.”
A short talk about money
This section’s got nothing to do with the viral post, so feel free to ignore the ramblings of this siao writer.

I just want to say that somebody’s worth shouldn’t be based on how much money they are making. Any profession is equally respectful, be that a janitor, a journalist, stay-at-home parent, a barista, artists, teachers… etc.
Our perception of money and looking to GDP as a growth measure simply doesn’t make sense unless the meaning of human life is to simply make money.
Maybe it is. I can’t tell you that it’s not but the money chase has basically caused many problems that I don’t feel good about. Just look at the problems that hawkers face, or the mistreatment of maids, or the perceptions that stay-at-home parents don’t have value. The single common factor is money.
But hey, I guess at worst, it’s good to know that humans can survive with just one kidney.
