In the digital world, battles are fought vigorously every day:

  • Is the dress black and blue, or white and gold?
  • Is it Yanny or Laurel?
  • Why are cats so much cuter than dogs?

And in the offline world, there’s one ongoing battle that you’ve probably crossed sword with before:

Is the “I” in IKEA pronounced like the letter “e”, or “I”?

Well, IKEA Singapore has set the record straight.

IKEA Confirms That in S’pore, IKEA is Pronounced as EE-KAY-UH, Not AI-KAY-UH

In case you didn’t already know, it’s more common for people using British English to pronounce the “I” in IKEA as “e”—i.e. ee-kay-uh.

People who use American English would pronounce it as ai-kay-uh.

In fact, this information is readily available on Google:

But how about in Singapore, whereby we follow British English closely, but still use some American English words like “expressway”?

Common sense would say that we should use ee-kay-uh, but this will be dismissed by people who use math instead of maths, or college instead of university.

So the restaurant chain that also sells furniture has come in to set the record straight.

To celebrate and promote IKEA Tampines’ 15th Anniversary that’s happening from 21 October 2021 to 24 October 2021, they posted a series of fun facts about IKEA Tampines.

Some were so boring, it received less than 100 likes.

But one received over 1,000 likes, simply because we finally have a reason to correct those pretentious people who somehow have “summer breaks” in Singapore: IKEA is pronounced as ee-kay-uh.

Another fun fact is about the chicken wings that everyone needs to have when he or she is in any IKEA outlet.

Shocking, because I know I’ve eaten at least 1 million wings, but didn’t know it was actually 1.3 million!

Promotion in IKEA Outlets from 21 to 24 October 2021

Although IKEA Tampines is celebrating its 15 birthday, the restaurant chain is having deals in all its outlets, with up to 50% off its furniture.

In addition, during this period, there’ll be IKEA donut and IKEA ice-cream as well:
