Oh, weirdly flavoured ice cream. A creative gastronomical celebration or just plain blasphemy?
This time we are talking about Indomie, pride and joy of Indonesians everywhere. This msg-loaded, unhealthy yet irresistibly-delicious stuff that’s usually served dry with a fried egg.
As a meal, mouth-watering. As a dessert?
Holi Ice Cream, West Jakarta
Yes, it’s in Indonesia.
Whoever’s reading this article and doesn’t live in Indonesia, here’s a chance to click away because you probably won’t be trying this anytime soon.
Still here?
Holi Ice Cream is a creamery that makes “Handcrafted” ice cream.
A couple of days ago, this appeared on their Instagram page.
Yes, those are fried shallots sprinkled on their ice cream, and yes that’s a moisturiser container (no, it’s not, I’m kidding). Take a deep breath.
The Backstory
You know that Youtube channel, “How It’s Made”? Don’t you think that many a time the more important question is How did it get Made? or Why is this even a thing?
Lucky for all of us, the owner of Holi Ice Cream, Stephen gave Coconuts, Jakarta the step by step process (not really).
It starts off with his love for Indomie and his penchant for eating his own ice cream for dessert.
“There was one time after having Indomie Goreng when I thought that it would be pretty cool to have Indomie goreng-flavoured ice cream for dessert,” Stephen said.
Subsequently, he acted on that thought, experimented and created this sweet and savoury ice cream for himself, which he reportedly ended up liking.
Then, he actually did a blind taste test on the people around him, and they also liked it.
Let’s just say they were surprised when told the ice cream they’re eating is Indomie-based.
“It got me thinking that rather than keeping the good taste of my own Indomie-flavored ice cream for myself, I should share it with other people too, especially since Indomie Goreng is everyone’s favourite food.”
Netizen’s Reactions
As expected from every weird flavour ever, people will usually have strong reactions that swing one way or the other.
The ice cream is sacrilegious.

“Ice cream with fried shallot, have people become too creative since PSBB (Large-Scale Social Restrictions protocol) was imposed.”
But you’ve got to give it to the creator.
In the end, whatever this abomination/ stroke of genius is, it’s nothing short of marketing success.

As for our dearest readers in Singapore, don’t worry, we didn’t forget about you.
While you can’t get your hands on Indomie-based ice cream, there is one place in Singapore where you can try Fried Chicken Ice Cream.
We’ve been there and, to be really, really honest, it was really good.
And it comes with caramel. Nothing goes wrong with caramel, as my editor will say.
