Recently, many food items were recalled by the Singapore Food Authority. From eggs to sprinkles, it seems that all food items are getting recalled due to undeclared allergens or a toxin ingredient.
This time, Li Kwong Agencies Co’s Instant Satay Spices was recalled.
Li Kwong Agencies Co’s Instant Satay Spices recalled
According to Straits Times, Li Kwong Agencies Co’s Instant Satay Spices were recalled for containing aflatoxins exceeding permitted levels.
All batches that have the expiry date of 19 Jan 2022 and sold in 50g and 500g packets are recalled.
Aflatoxins can cause cancer, birth defects or mutations
Aflatoxins are known to cause liver cancer. It can lead to birth defects or mutations. Exposure of aflatoxins through food should be kept as low as possible.
The toxin can occur in foods such as peanuts, corn or tree nuts. Aflatoxins are the result of fungal contamination before and after harvest.
“As the manufacturer also processes other peanut products, SFA is conducting further investigations and stepping up checks on its products,” SFA added.
If you have bought these products, do not eat them. If you are unsure whether the packet that you have purchased belongs to the batches that are recalled, you can contact the store that you have purchased the product from.
If you already had a satay feast with this satay seasoning, do go see a doctor.
Other products recalled due to high levels of Aflatoxins
Like Li Kwong Agencies Co’s Instant Satay Spices, Singlong Foodstuff Trading’s Ground Peanut Powder with Sugar was recalled due to high levels of aflatoxins.
The level of aflatoxins detected in the product exceeded the maximum limits stated in the Singapore Food Regulations. The affected products is Singlong brand’s ground peanut powder with sugar in 300g packages, for all expiry dates.
Recalled products to take note of
Aside from Li Kwong Agencies Co’s Instant Satay Spices and Singlong Foodstuff Trading’s Ground Peanut Powder with Sugar, here are some other products you should take note of:
Meadows Pure Drinking Water – Bottled Water was recalled for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium you can find in faeces, was found in the water. The affected batch comes in 1.5-litre bottles and expires on 9 Nov 2022.
Picard Rolled Yule Log Chocolate Tonka Bean Cake – The cake was recalled for containing tonka beans. These beans contain high levels of the coumarin chemical, which can cause liver damage. This affects all of its 550g packages.
Crab Brand’s Black Pepper Seed – The food-borne bacterium, bacillus cereus, can be found in soil, vegetation and the intestinal tracts of insects and animals. Consuming food with this food-borne bacterium can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. The affected batches are:
- 50g bottles expiring on 1 Nov 2021
- 90g bottles expiring on 1 Oct 2021
