A man caused a disturbance in a housing estate while holding a utility knife after drinking, prompting residents to call the police out of safety concerns.

His wife, who came looking for him, was shocked to find her husband handcuffed and taken away in a police car.

The incident happened on Friday (25 Apr 2025) around 5:00 PM at Block 507 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8. The arrested individual was a male resident living nearby.

A member of the public, Mr. Lim (name transliterated from Mandarin), 41, contacted Shin Min Daily News, reporting that he saw several police cars and officers surrounding a few men on the ground floor of the block.

Mr. Lim later witnessed one of the men being taken to a police car while other officers remained at the scene to continue their investigation.

Police Response and Witness Accounts

When reporters arrived at the scene around 7:00 PM, two police cars remained parked nearby, and a man was being questioned by several officers at the foot of the building.

After giving his statement, the man went to a nearby pavilion to speak with a woman about what had happened.

When approached by reporters, the 36-year-old Mohan (name transliterated from Mandarin) had a noticeable smell of alcohol, but his thoughts and speech remained clear.

He said the arrested person was his good friend, and they had been drinking and chatting in the pavilion since about 3:00 PM.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t have any conflict. I donโ€™t understand why the police suddenly appeared and took him away.โ€

Wifeโ€™s Distress and Community Reactions

The woman at the pavilion identified herself as the arrested manโ€™s wife. She had originally come to get cigarettes from her husband, but instead found many police officers on the scene who handcuffed and took her husband away.

During the interview, she appeared hesitant to speak and later claimed she didnโ€™t know anything about the situation.

Residents revealed that Mohan and his friend frequently drank alcohol at the foot of the block and in the pavilion, and would make noise in the process.

Since they didnโ€™t harass residents, neighbours turned a blind eye.

โ€œThey come here to drink almost every day. Everyone here recognises them at first glance,โ€ said one resident.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the arrested man had been loudly causing a disturbance while holding a utility knife after drinking in the housing estate.

Some residents, concerned he might lose control and hurt someone, called the police. When reporters arrived, they saw officers taking away a long, box-shaped evidence container.

When questioned, police confirmed receiving a report at approximately 5:25 PM and arrested a 33-year-old man for possession of an offensive weapon.

The case is still under investigation.
