Even if you don’t use YouTube on a regular basis, you’re probably familiar with Ghib Ojisan, the Japanese YouTuber who once visited Yishun expecting to find dead cats and bodies all over the estate.
To his surprise, he found it to be a rather nice neighbourhood instead.
While he only came to Singapore to do a travel vlog, Ojisan ended up falling in love with a Singaporean and marrying her.
The couple decided to settle in Singapore, where they stayed with his wife’s family.
Ojisan hasn’t been here for a very long time, but he’s already starting to sound like a Singaporean.

How so? Lamenting the painfully high prices of houses here, of course.
In a video on Wednesday (23 Sep), Ojisan confirmed he and his wife had purchased a four-room resale flat, something that made him feel like he was “officially based in Singapore”.
The resale flat cost around S$500,000, which Ojisan said is the most expensive purchase he’s made in his life.
“I’m officially broke”, he joked.
But he and his wife are going to have to shell out even more cash.
Once the couple move into their new flat, they plan to renovate the place as they don’t like the look of some areas of the house.
Nevertheless, the YouTuber and his wife are glad to move out of his in-laws’ home, where he has been staying for the past two years.
“I hope they don’t… feel stressed about me anymore”, he said.
In comparing the housing situations in both countries, Ojisan said the application process in Singapore is simpler as most of it can be done online.
However, he feels that public housing in Singapore, especially the bathrooms, needs some work.
He notes that while it’s common to renovate new flats in Singapore, that’s not the case in Japan.
So, why did he choose Singapore?
In a previous video, the YouTuber explained why he chose to settle down here instead of his homeland.
One of the reasons Ojisan gave (besides his wife) is that he wants people to have a “better understanding” of Singapore.
“My current focus is to show more of Singapore,” he stated in a vlog.
Who is Ghib Ojisan?
For those who don’t know, Ojisan is famous for his solo travel vlogs and videos of his busking experiences in Japan.
As you would’ve guessed, he does a lot of videos comparing things between Japan and Singapore, as well as reviews of Singapore food.
He speaks both Japanese and English in his videos, but provides subtitles for both languages.
Just a month ago, the YouTuber returned to Yishun and found that it may not be as innocent as it once seemed.
Ah. He’s already one of us.
