A used car dealer once told me this: “All used car dealers are cons. Believe their words at your own risk. So, do you still want to buy this car that’s just a second car for its previous lady owner?”

I was a tad confused but I still bought the car, only scrap it a few days later as it was missing an engine and a gearbox.

There are some professions that, unfortunately, might not have the best reputation out there, but to smear the entire industry might be a little overkill.

So when a public figure implies that, a can of worms is opened

Joanne Peh Implies Contractors Are ‘Cons’ & Got Heated Responses From Netizens

We all know Joanne Peh, the well-established actress who’s also Qi Yiwu’s wife.

Last year, the couple revealed that they’ve bought a home in the east side of Singapore. But as you probably know, renovating your house at this period could be challenging with the limited manpower that contractors have.

After all, even construction of HDB flats has been delayed.

In June this year, it turns out that the renovation of their home is still ongoing. Joanne also added that they can now tell “when vendors are in for the quick buck”, and appear to be willing to pay more for “great quality work”.

And then, as we’re still wondering whether she’s pregnant, this happened:

The image is innocuous, but her caption is strongly worded: “Contractors — perhaps there’s a reason why it starts with CON, though I cannot understand why it has to be this way. Do I look like a carrot?”

Lest you’re not aware, “chop carrot head” is a term that’s used to an act whereby someone’s being duped to pay more.

Needless to say, that struck some raw nerves.

In fact, she went into a war of words with an Instagram user who said that it was “unprofessional and unfair for u to generalise and stereotype all contractors just because of your own personal experience or point of view .”

Joanne struck back, saying, “You are welcome to share your positive experience with renovation and contractors, but since you don’t know half my story, don’t use labels like “unprofessional” and “unfair” to gaslight my circumstances.”

The two had a passive aggressive agreement which you can read here.

Nevertheless, some people also shared their nightmare stories with their contractors / interior designers, which leads to this question: is the industry really that bad?

Top Industries With the Most Complaints in CASE

The most logical way would be to look at the industry with the most number of complaints with CASE.

Given that 2019 (complaints for that year might be made next year) and 2020 aren’t our usual years, we’ve to look at data from 2018.

The number one spot is the beauty industry, and with some beauticians focusing more on “package sales” than your face, it’s no surprise. The second is motorcars, whereby mileage in second-hand cars can drop as fast as my bank account on payday. The third is transportation, which was mainly due to the bike-sharing incidents then.

And the fourth? Contractors.

In 2017, when everyone was still happily riding their bike-sharing bicycles, contractors was on the third spot.

In other words, to some extent, yes, you’d better learn how to tell if any vendor is making a quick bang when you’re renovating your house.
