What is there left to dislike in a world that houses the worst of mankind? Minor inconveniences.
Today, I awoke to the jarring sounds of construction from a site just a few blocks away from my home. I wasn’t a very happy camper.
Though truth be told, I would be lying if I said I hadn’t grown the urge to rampage into the site with a lorry… What? Did nobody get the reference?
Well, it has been at least a year since the incident that has taken the local internet scene by storm! I’m talking about this one.
Lorry Driver Has Been Found Guilty
The lorry driver, 58-year-old Teo Sen Tiong, has been found guilty of causing harm to a 35-year-old cyclist, Eric Cheung, during an incident that occurred on 22 December 2018.
Prior to the trial on 17 December, Teo had opposed to the charges against him.
Allegedly Swerved To Avoid Taxi
According to the driver and his lawyer, he had swerved his lorry to avoid a taxi.
Teo’s lawyer, Chia Boon Teck, defended that his client did not physically hit the cyclist’s bicycle. 35-year-old, Eric Cheung, had simply jumped off his bike and rolled onto the grass patch.
Rejected Argument Due to Substantial Evidence
After revising the evidence at hand, District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt said, “I find that the accused had deliberately swerved his lorry into the path of the cyclist.”
He rejected the argument presented by Teo and his lawyer. “There is simply no basis to support his defence,” he added.
Teo’s mitigation and sentencing are scheduled to happen next year.
If found guilty of causing hurt by a rash act, the alleged could be jailed for a year and fined a maximum amount of S$5,000.
The moral of the story? As annoying as an inconvenience can be, it’s sometimes better to leave it be.
