If you’re a driver, you’d definitely hate these three thing: traffic lights that are always red, blur drivers who road-hog the road cuz he doesn’t know where to go and cyclists.

Granted that there are good cyclists who keep to the left of a lane, but out of one good cyclist, there would be millions of cyclists who beat the red lights like nobody’s business, cut into lanes without due care and most importantly, take up the entire lane because they feel like doing so.

Like this particular cyclist.

Usually, it’ll end with the driver’s blood boiling, but this time, it ended in a way that no one would have expected.

Read on because it’s truly a lesson that drivers and cyclists should learn from.

Super Viral Video

With Facebook’s latest move to prevent the spread of fake news, viral contents by pages are getting less reach: unless it’s a breaking news like a footage of an alien landing on Yishun, most contents would usually be drowned by your long-time-no-see uncle’s daily “Good Morning” images.

But this video, in seven hours, have garnered well over 15K shares, 4.5k comments and a whopping 575K views—a remarkable feat in Facebook nowadays.

And it’s not about Yishun landing on aliens.

It’s about a rowdy cyclist and a lorry driver who finally buay tahan (or simply lost control).

Summary

First posted on Roads.SG and supposedly sent over by someone known as Y Lim, it’s a rather simple video; a cyclist decided to play punk by cycling on the middle of the road, even when his friend is obeying the rules by keeping to the left.

Soon after, the lorry tried to overtake but the cyclist did the unthinkable: he purposely and angrily hit the lorry’s side mirror, which fell in front of the lorry.

Then, for some reason, the lorry swerved towards the cyclist and collapse with it.

While it seems serious, you can see that the cyclist did jump to his feet immediately after that, so there might not be any serious injuries except for some bruised ego.

If you can’t read the description, here’s what is written:

Road rage between cyclist and lorry driver of GBD4011Y.

“TO BE HONEST, it is already hard to drive in one lane TOGETHER with a cyclist. And in this case, the cyclist was selfish and irresponsible to ride in the middle of the lane. Thus, the lorry honked TWICE. Please note, TWO SHORT HONKS ONLY. (Once to ask him to move to the side, another time when they ignored the horn).

However, the rowdy cyclist went beside the lorry and SMASH THE SIDE MIRROR, what the hell? And the lorry driver banged him onto the grass verge just to get back at the cyclist for what he has done. The cyclist fell to the ground but WAS NOT injured. He stood up and the lorry uncle stopped his vehicle.

Do you think the cyclist is right? How can one just smash the mirror and get rowdy just because he think he SHOULDNT GET HONKED. Is keeping to the side of the roads so hard?”

Yeah, so if you’re wondering if something could have happened between the driver and the cyclist prior to this incident, here’s your answer: it’s merely two short honks to warn the cyclist.

Why It Goes Viral

We’ve learned that in order to know why a video goes viral, you should read the comments and the comments made by people who shared the video.

It seems like most of them have shared simply because of one reason: they’re angry at the cyclist despite what the lorry driver has done.

Here are some comments…

…and the comments made by people who shared the video:

Some of their comments are justified because the lorry driver could have panicked when the side mirror is hit; moreover, the side mirror landed right in front of the lorry, and even the calmest driver would have panicked and swerved when something suddenly appeared in front of him or her.

Well, whether deliberate or not, one thing’s for sure:

Rules on Cycling on the Road

According to the LTA website, these are the hard rules on cycling:

However, there’s also a code of conduct for cyclists to follow, and one of which is this:

Always ride as close as practicably to the left-hand edge of roads and allow traffic to overtake you safely. Keep a straight course and avoid sudden swerves.

And of course, as for vehicles like the lorry, all drivers would know the rules: on the road, even if you’re not wrong, as long as a pedestrian is injured, you’ll kena.

So the lesson’s simple: cyclists, don’t be arrogant just because you think that vehicles can’t do anything to you. Drivers, avoid cyclists whenever you can.
