More often than not, we tend to associate the concept of being a hero with the big screen. That is to say; we feel compelled to have some sort of power before we can commit to particularly heroic acts.

Though of course, there are also cases like this guy, whose superpower is one that we can all dream of achieving one day (in a realistic sense).
But here’s the thing. Contrary to what Marvel and DC may constantly wave in your face, you do not need to get bitten by a radioactive spider, or become rich enough to buy entire countries, to be a hero. No. Rather, what you need may be something a lot more basic than that…
Like a pure willingness to help.
And also, some courage even when you find yourself being deathly afraid.
81-Year-Old Lady Helped Put Out Fire At Jurong West Despite Being Deathly Afraid
According to AsiaOne, an 81-year-old woman, Madam Lim Ee Chin, managed to help her neighbours out in a serious pinch, despite having her own fears at the time.
The incident is reported to have occurred at 11.20 p.m. on 9 August.
According to the news report, a fire had occurred at her neighbours’ Housing Board flat (at a corner residential unit of Block 917 Jurong West Street 91), and things naturally got rather hectic.
However, instead of turning tail and prioritising her own life first, the elderly woman chose to help her neighbours out. According to the report, she stayed to pass buckets of water from her flat to two of her neighbours to put out the fire…
Even though she was reportedly scared of the raging flames at the time.
But it worked out. The flames were eventually kept under control by the trio’s efforts, even before SCDF personnel arrived on the scene.
Commended For Her Bravery
For her bravery, Madam Lee was awarded the Community First Responder Award on 27 August.
The award is presented to members of the public who have volunteered to provide assistance to others in distress or to save property or both.
“Despite her age, she did not hesitate to help to put out the fire,” said Mr Ang Wei Neng, Member of Parliament for West Coast GRC (Nanyang).
“Her selfless act has assisted to mitigate the damages and injuries caused by the fire… I am delighted to present Mdm Lim Ee Chin the SCDF’s Community First Responder Award.”
And SCDF concurred.
“Mdm Lim’s action exemplified bravery and in her own words, the 𝘬𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵,” said SCDF.
“We hope you have been inspired by her as much as we do.”
You can view SCDF’s Facebook post here.
With that said, we, too, would like to commend Mdm Lim’s kindness and heroic spirit. It takes a lot of courage to stay on and help someone out…
And that’s especially so when you are deathly afraid yourself.
As such, kudos, Mdm Lim. You’ve taught us that heroism is an act that’s unbound by anything. Not age, not fitness…
As long as we wish to, we can all help to make the world a better place.
And to end off, we have one of the Wise Old Man’s quotes:
“If the heroes run and hide…
“Who will stay and fight?”
Though I’m pretty sure he just plagiarised the quote, but that’s beside the point.
